There are real deals that seem too good to be true, but they will only last a short while. Wink

I agree with Calvin, given that a) there is enough knowledge about lenses and b) enough patience Wink

There are lots of factors affecting the chance of finding bargains:

1) How deep is your pocket(I have lost many deals as my pocket is not deep enough)
2) Where you live
3) Who you know
4, 5) knowledge and patience as mentioned above
6) Luck
7) Braveness

and more...

Yes, as the title of this thread often attests to. But one must be observant, yet willing to take risks now and then. But sometimes the signs are just not right and that's when it's time to take a pass.

I found a canon FD 400mm f2.8 lens on a "graiglist". I cannot see the lens myself and i got a picture :

It have a lot of mark on the front lens, maybe fungus i don't know and it seems that the front element has been opened already ( look at the mark on the front black ring )
is this lens worth 300euros ?

It has fungus, and someone clearly tried to open it.

yes. i need to talk to the seller for better pictures. i don't know if it worse the buy ...

To me the fact that someone with no knowledge and skill tried to go in there screams "run!"

ad 3) yes, this is a value
ad 4,5) oh, big YESSSS - most important
ad 6) yes, at times, but cannot be counted on

It is a bargain if you paid $10,000 for a $50,000 lens/camera. Wink

I think I got one real bargain.

I took the risk to get an Asahi Pentax Spotmeter V which was sold for parts. In the description, seller was saying the needle was moving but didn't show the correct exposure and he didn't know how to set it, so sold it as parts.
It has a zone system sticker, so was used by an experienced photographer, and evidently not the seller.

As it was 16€, I decided it was worth trying.
Just received it and... it works perfectly ! Very Happy

Asahi Pentax Spotmeter V : 16€. I think seller didn't know what he had in hand.

I have one -- not with the Zone System mod, though, although it was common to do so. Bought mine about 25 years ago, and it still works perfectly. Because it takes the old 1.35v mercury batteries, I use 675 hearing aid batteries to power it.

Original Pentax AP with "Sonnar" Takumar 58mm 1:2 for $50.
I think that's a real bargain.

Also a praktica FX with an M42 primolan for $60.

I've had a couple other decent purchases, but those 2 deals alone make it a great week.

Last week i got a Konica 135mm 2.5 with non working aperture for 10€.
I opened it up and found out that the aperture switch was out of position. Fixing cost me about 15 minutes. Smile

My bargains for April, all from local thrift stores. Prices are USD.

1) "SMC Pentax-M 1:3.5 135mm" (Pentax mount): $8.69
2) "Konica Hexanon AR 24mm F2.8" (Konica mount): $21.73. I had to go above my self-imposed $10 limit for this one, but it was worth it. My first 24mm manual focus lens.
3) Pentax "Super-Takumar 1:3.5/35" (M42 mount): $7.60. This came with the original metal front cap, a Takumar rear cap, Pentax 49mm UV filter, a leather case/strap stamped "Takumar 3.5/35" - and attached to the strap - a second leather case with a Pentax metal hood for a 50mm 1.4 lens.
4) "Olympus Stylus Epic DLX" (mju II) 35mm Compact Camera: $2.65. Heavily worn, it looks much worse in person.

A very good month for me. Most thrift-store lenses I've seen are either 50mm or 135mm. I was glad to finally find some 24mm and 35mm lenses.

Matt

Just bought an Enna Ennalyt 3.5/28 - as part of a lot of photo stuff (filters, close up lenses etc.) for $10. Pretty dirty, but cleaned up nice, test shots coming soon.

M42 CZJ Flektogon 35/2.4 plus Pentacon 200/4 zebra and black CZJ Tessar - 57 euro on eBay. Pentacon needs aperture repair, the rest is ok.

I just got these two in the mail:

80€ for the MC24/2.8 VFC and 35€ for the MD300/4.5, seemed like a good deal...

Given the typical prices for the VFC version, I might just sell it and keep my regular 24/2.8.

PostPosted: Thu May 12, 2016 9:46 am    Post subject: Reply with quote

... not a bad deal *wow* Wink

The 24 VFC of course is a collectors item, and its price is far too high for "real photography purposes".
If it was a shift 24mm, ok ... but it isn't!

Anyway, enjoy it Wink
