I can get this lens (28-90) for 14€ with oil on blades, making them moving slow... how hard is it to clean them?

Back when I was shooting lots of film with my Canon FD system, probably my most often used lens was a Vivitar S1 28-90. I shot hundreds of slides with that lens and loved it. Recently I reacquired one in Nikon mount, so I can use it with my Nikons as well as my EOS SLRs. I owned an S1 28-105 for a few years after I switched to Nikon and enjoyed it just as much as the 28-90. I've read where some folks claim the 28-105 is inferior to the 28-90, but that wasn't my experience at all. It was a fine lens. My 28-105 was the one with the wide grip that had the S1 logo on it -- I can only guess who made it. I have a S1 105/2.5 Macro with the wide grip and S1 logo and it was made by Kino/Kiron. So I'm thinking that the 28-105 was too.

Of course, this isn't a Vivitar or Komine lens, but the Tamron SP 35-80 is
considered a very good, if not great lens, at least in some circles. http://www.adaptall-2.org/lenses/01A.html

It is a pretty compact lens, and I've certainly gotten sharp results, even
wide open. I think they are going for $50-$100 USD on the bay.

I have one of those Tamrons that a forum member gave me. It is rather infested with fungus and I'm hoping to figure out how to dismantle it one of these days. It's pretty complex for a zoom on the inside so I've been rather timid in my approach. But anyway, yes, I agree about the the lens's reputation. It is a very well thought of lens. I don't want to hijack this thread either, but when I look at the specs for the Tamron SP 28-80mm f/3.5-4.2 at adaptall-2.org, that is another lens that looks like an excellent performer.

I took a look at the S1 28-90s and 28-105s on eBay and it would appear that, at this time, some reasonably good deals can be had on the 28-90s, but that if the buyer wants that extra 15mm of focal length, it's gonna cost big time. Most of the -105s I see there have crazy high prices associated with them.

Well rather than buy the 28-90 zoom with oil on the blades, I'd get a mint Vivitar 28-85 (No 77) for 14 euros.....my copy is quite good.

...and going over this thread again was interested in the comparison of the Mustang and M.B.5 (Martin Baker)

MB5 replica being/has been built in the US using Mustang wings:-

If I remember correctly the Series 1 28-105 is not made by Kiron (whereas the (at least one of the) 28-90

All vivitar/kiron varifocals 28-90 + 28-105 are base on a opcon/opticon design
(as was the 35/85 2.Cool

Vivitar 28-90 2.8/3.5 is ONLY made by Komine
Vivitar 28-105 2.8/3.8 can be Kiron made

see ebay n°220657640424
Or cosina made (rubber s1 grip)
see ebay n° 280563105574
Kiron also sold the 28-105 on its' own name with 3.2/4.5 opening (same lens !)
see ebay n° 290475746167

There is also a kobori 28-105 3.5/4.5 non varifocal version COMPLETELY different
see ebay n° 380268179132

I have the 28-90 : very handy : quality near perfect if you avoid full ap
ps : TRUEopening of 28-90 is 3.5/4.5 (i presume true opening of 28/105 is close from 3.2/4.5 (kiron's)

Did any1 have expirience with AF Voigtlander 28-105/2.8-3.8 for EF?
People say it's the same vivtar s1 design as in cosina, soligor and other's with same range and apperture. Some say they are bad, some say they are good...

Same as cosina (opcon design) .. usually cosina made lenses with cosina / vivitar / voigtlander name are lower quality than kiron

The Vivitar Series 1 28-105 lenses were only made by Cosina. There is a non-Series 1 model, made by Kobori.

In the 28-105 range, the Kiron model is an excellent performer.

Bought a completely different lens in the end! Laughing

Picked up a Tamron Adaptall 2 35-70/3.5 which should do the job OK - 2.5 stops of IS = 35-70/1.8 or 52-105/1.8 on crop which should do me fine Smile

Did a bit of research afterwards and it turned out that I already have a perfectly good lens in this range - the Tamron Adaptall 2 35-135/3.5-4.2 which is a constant f3.5 all the way up to 80mm, doh! Laughing

The non Series 1, 28-105's were made by Kobori. The Series 1, 28-105's are Cosina made.

Russ, you give some great information! Thanks for researching it, and I love that
you gave us some background information. That is a good thing about a forum, at
least in my mind.

Also, there are two Cosina versions. The one with the 67mm filter thread is by far, the better one. I prefer my Vivitar Series 1 28-90 or Kiron 28-105 over both Cosina models.
