Well, I just scored myself a non-AI and AI 2x teleconverter. I had actually been looking for a 1.4x converter, but this one was inexpensive enough to buy just to see what its like...

My wife has been exploring 'digiscoping' birds with a spotting scope and her Canon p&S so I have some focal length competition to even up here Smile

I had considered getting the converter that grizzly33 sells, but given the shipping delays and grumpiness there decided to go with a different seller for now.

Not sure it is only ‘Cheap’ converters. I have the TelePlus MC7 which I tried yet again only a few days ago. I tested it on a few good primes on a good bright clear sunny day and would say it was rubbish. I have two Teleplus MC 7 the standard one and a ‘Macro’ 1:1 version. I only have them because I picked them up dirt cheap years ago. I have also had a couple of Tamron 2x adaptors, these were always picked up free attached to Tamron lenses I wanted. I don’t rate them, although I hear of many who do (But don’t know the people). I think you have to very lucky to find a lens and converter that get on well.
As for expensive matched converters a friend has the matched Canon 2x for his f2.8 70-210 and he doesn’t rate that.
Another Canon owning friend has recently tried 2 Kenko 1.5x converters with his newish IS 70-300 Canon lens and he returned both, these are £80 converters.
I know a little about the Vivitar converters as our club had many of them for sale when Vivitar UK (Here in Swindon) closed down about five years ago, I think we still have them for sale! They made a 1.4x the usual 2x and many so called ‘Matched’ converters.
IMO you are better to spend your money on one of the old f8 500mm lenses or an excellent Tamron 500mm mirror lens. If you want or need more than 500mm I would ask if you are into photography or astronomy!!!

I agree 100% after a few bad experience with cheap converters, like Tamron SP ,Vivitar, Russians etc. I decided to buy instead longer lenses like Tamron SP 500 etc.

I actually have a Nikon 2X converter, used it once and didn't like the results. To be honest, I don't think I gave it a fair shake though. I will have to do a more thorough test.

The macro focussing vivitar converter is pretty good - but then it's macro. I haven't ever used it for anything else.

As I wrote I do have the ‘Macro’ Teleplus 2X converter and to be honest I can’t see the point of it?
It is putting a variable extension tube on your lens (Useful) and spoiling it by adding a load of extra glass to your well designed and manufactured lens, doubling your FL and giving away two stops. That’s a great deal !!!
If I want to add extra glass I can do better with front mounted close up lenses.

I personally think that tele converter additions are only useful in long trips and during vacations, when you want your reflex camera with you but can not carry heavy bags around all the time.

Then a good fast 135mm with a good 2x converter can become a medium fast 270mm lens which is long enough for any practical purpose - you sacrifice quality compared to a 300mm prime but don't have to carry around a big lens through airports, busses, long walks, etc.

it's a tradeoff.

Meanint it only makes sense when you really get something in change for something else. If you only plan to shoot around your neighborhood or in small trips, a longer prime lens is the only choice if you care about quality. Even the best converter will degrade quality somehow.
