Hello,

I'm not a big fan of putting generic caps on vintage lenses--that is to say I have a lens cap thats about 50 years old and it's made of metal and i want to use it. The felt or material applied to the inner perimeter has sort of disintegrated leading to the cap hanging loose over the lens.
( ...wish it was screw on)

My question is 3 part:

1. I peeled off the material that was about to come off--should i reapply glue to that, or should i attempt to put in new material altogether

2. Any recommended glues that have a stronger adhesive property when applied to metal (brass? or aluminum) . I looked online and it looked like epoxy or superglue, but as you know the material needs to be exactly the right width for it to fit correctly.... so i would like to get it right the first time.

3. Anyone with any tips on applying pressure during the process>

Here's a thought: clothes dryer lint and double-sided tape. Couldn't hurt to try.

how about that self-adhesive stuff that one puts under furniture, etc? it is sold also in sheet form.

There are some self-adhesive felt sheets. I've successfully used them to replace the old felt of some plan-film holders but I don't remember where from I bought them. They are pretty solid - the slides of the film holders put them under constant stress but they resisted.
At "Micro-tools" they have something, I think, similar:

Awesome suggestions...I think the self adhesive strips will be easier than trying to use the original piece.

Thanks everyone!

I buy self adhesive backed felt sheets, A4 size, from the UK chain of Hobbycraft stores, it's branded as 'Fabfelt'. I use it for camera light seals, there's also 'Fabfoam'' - I use the foam and felt for seals. The felt is about 0.5mm thick, but it does compress.

This is similar.
