which is a better lens optically?
Their focal length is same...
Is 37A upgrade version of 11?

As far as performance is concerned, my J37 produces "better" (sharper, more contrast, intense colours...) pictures than my J11.
Still, personally, I like the J11 pictures more. I can't even explain why. It's a very personal feeling.

I'm still confused about the Jupiter 11 and Jupiter 11-A.
I remember reading J11-A is better than J11....is this true?

Sounds about right! The Jupiter 11 shouldn't be dismissed though - it's got a nice rounded character.

Resolution ???
I would like to know more about it ! how it is calculated & quality difference it makes on crop DSLRs...
maybe with a photo example, if possible..

Or is there any link for it ???

It is resolution in lines per mm. The first value = in center, the second value = in corners.

Russian optical industry measured resolution in a bit different way than Japanese or German manufacturers, so they are not comparable mutually (you can find Japanese lenses with >hundred lines/mm, but there won't be better than good Rusian lenses).

There was a special comittee in former CCCP, which measured resolution (and other parameters) for all brands, so you can compare them directly. According to my limited experience, it's really consistent.

I am behind this opinion, Jupiter-37AM also available, AM is multi-coated if I know well.

Has anybody resolution information about Helios 135 (export model mainly for the British market)?

Nope. It's a fake. Made in Japan by a no-name optical company specifically to exploit the fact that the Helios brand was not trademarked in the UK or elsewhere outside USSR. It was distributed by the company that had the 'right' to the mark, so it wasn't outright illegal. Nevertheless, all Japanese-made Helios and Jupiter lenses are essentially fakes that were trying to ride on the well-known yet unprotected brand names.

I have this 37A version and some shots these weeks. Lens coating looks fantastic but soft at F3.5, acceptable at F4.0, good when smaller than F5.6

@ about F5.6

100% crop

@ about F5.6

100% crop

Mine (MC version) is sharp straight from wide open (contrast is on the low side at 3.5, really good by 5.6 and smaller, but spatial resolution is always good and does not improve much when stopped down).

All I can add is that one of my my Jupiter 37's either the A or AM is always with me when I go out to take pictures and I don't see a lot of difference between them. Very Happy

jupiter-37A ??? yes is a gem..because is not sharp as the Sonnar C/Y MMJ...but I don't like lenses too sharp for portraits!

PostPosted: Sat Mar 26, 2011 9:58 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

Without shooting resolution charts, it's hard to say on normal shots which is sharper. I'm not discarding those resolutions scores - I just can't easily see a difference if using the lenses at f/4 or f/5.6. I will need to use them a lot more to see differences in rendering.

I actually wrote a review/overview of the Russian 135mm a few days ago - there are samples from all three lenses.

My Jupiter 11A came with two copies of a certificate listing its resolution as:

central: 48.5 lines per mm
peripheral: 29.1 lines per mm

Note that these values (and the serial number) were filled in by hand, not printed, so it looks as each lens was tested individually before leaving the factory and had its resolution measured and recorded in its certificate. Leica for the masses, eh?

I had the J11 135/4 ( RF version for Zorkies ) , 37 A , 37 A MC , Sonnar 135 / 3,5 and a couple of Tairs . On my Pentax K10d , the
37 A MC is as good as the CZJ Sonnar it copies . Slightly better than the single coated version and the Tairs . All these lenses outperform the DA* 50-135 up to f:8 . From then on I cannot see any difference in resolution terms .
The 135/4 is another kind of lens , a bit soft wide open , with pleasant bokeh , a delight for femminile portraits or flowers with an atmosphere .

For what it's worth, I reccommend the Tair-11 for about twice the price. Here are some from my J-11:

That is not true. The only differance is that J11-A has an interchangeable mount adapter (but I have seen no one except m42) as J11 has fixed mount (m42 or m39 or bayonet (rangefinders or old SLRs or Kiev bayonet)).
That is described here: http://www.photohistory.ru/1207248189157431.html (russian).

I must admit I prefer my J11A to my Tak as it produces wonderful colours:

I sold my J37A within a day of owning it. Nothing really special about it so it had to go.
