Attila,
The Viv 285HV has varipower from Full down to 1/16th. I don't know
if all issues of this flash (Japanese, Korean, Chinese) are safe to use
on the hotshoe. I know that it is definitely not safe for Canon. You can
use a hotshoe adapter that has a PC terminal and use the flash offcamera.

Thank you Bill, if not safe for Canon I guess not safe for Olympus too.

Safe for Nikon! Wink Nikon built pretty robust electronics into their
hotshoes. Don't know about Olympus, what limits they have for
trigger voltage.

I really think that Nikon builds the best and strongest cameras. The pity for us manual lens lovers is that stupid register distance thing.

That, and not having Canon's CMOS sensor. That would be the perfect
camera!

The 283 Made in China and the 285HV are perfectly safe. Flash sync voltage 6v. The really old models 285 non HV and the 283 made in Japan like most old flashunits are not safe, and not worth bying anyway as they will wore out, or worse not been used for years, which ruins the capacitator.

The 285 is so good and popular with photographers that it is being made again and is available in the US for about $100.

Both are about the best workhorse flash units you can get. Only the big Metze 45 series are better.

There are plenty of good flash sites on the web, many of them list flash unit voltages.

The Canon 5D and 1 series cameras are (As all cameras should be) safe up to 400v via the flash synce plug. This makes then usable with studio units which are usually 200 - 400 volts. I have seen a few Nikon and Canons fry when plugged into studio units with those silly hot shoe adaptors.

I also recommend the SB24, SB25, and SB28 Nikon speedlites. I have
the SB25 that has adjustable power from full down to 1/64. I use it offcamera via silly hotshoe adapter and am very satisfied with the results for aquatic photos. I got the idea from Strobist.com
