I am following Hannes Caspar on Facebook. This is one of his latest posts. Darn good.

But who is the person who created the account and will relay the text?

Just wondering because we are not talking directly to the AI.

This forum is a fantastic resource, but it is also full of misinformation, opinion, speculation, and conjecture, things that ChatGTP is notoriously poor at weeding out.

I'm really not sure scraping this forum is going to have the effects on ChatGTP's ability to give good information on the subjects that one might think.

Definitely not.
I think my previous posting regarding ChatGPT were clear enough - in its current form, the answers of ChatGPT nearly always contain some wrong "facts", and usally are rather low quality.

Should Chat-GPT nonsense infiltrate this website too much, I'll certainly loose interest and post elsewhere.

Q: Is the zeiss 28-85mm better than the nikon Nikkor 28-85mm?

ChatGPT wrote:
The Nikon 28-85mm f/3.5-4.5 AF Nikkor lens was released in 1986 and was discontinued in 1999. It has a 3:1 zoom range and is known for its sharpness, especially wide open, and accurate autofocus 1. According to a review by Ken Rockwell, this lens is almost as sharp as the Nikkor AI-s manual focus fixed-focal length lenses it replaces 1.

The Zeiss 28-85mm f/3.5-4.5 lens is not a direct comparison to the Nikon 28-85mm f/3.5-4.5 AF Nikkor lens. However, the Zeiss Milvus 1.4/85 ZF.2 Nikon lens is a popular choice for portrait photography and is known for its sharpness and low chromatic aberration 2.

It's difficult to compare the two lenses since they have different focal lengths and are designed for different purposes. However, if you're looking for a lens that is ideal for portrait photography, the Zeiss Milvus 1.4/85 ZF.2 Nikon lens is a great option 2.

WOW. TBH I had expected more from AI. Much more. Sounds like Zeiss is paying them for trying to sell the Milvus.

I also find the lack of quoted/cited sources to be concerning as well.
Sometimes, it takes some very good sources a bit of time to get things accurately correct as well, especially concerning lens history.

By the way I've read hilarious posts about AI interactions where the AI was asked to make a baking recipe with a slang word for shit stuck in the fur of animals. Which it claimed was very tasty and healthy.

And another that was dead sure that the current year was 2021 and that the person asking was clearly confused because the AI had a perfect reference source of basic information. It still held on to that opinion after being pushed about the date about the Gaza war. Then it denied that there was a Gaza war because it had not started yet in 2021.

Chat AI's should only be used for comedy.

We agree that we could call it "trained" science and the results are as good as the trainers.

I asked it the same question today and it seems to have improved:

Both the Zeiss 28-85mm and the Nikon Nikkor 28-85mm are quality lenses, but the "better" choice depends on your specific needs, preferences, and the camera system you use. Factors like optical performance, build quality, autofocus speed, and price can vary. It's recommended to read reviews, compare specifications, and consider your photography requirements to determine which lens aligns better with your preferences and camera system.

General suggestions is applicable to most lenses, except autofocus speed. Laugh 1

I'll certainly do.

Nevertheless ChatGPT "opinions" will slowly inflitrate not only this website, but just all our exchanges, everywhere.

I'll keep an eye on it, and check ChatGPT opinions (i. e. "Bing" AI answers by google) regularly to get an idea about its accuracy. At the moment the reported "facts" seem to be something between "useless chatter" and "often wrong". Google search results - diplayed in parallel - usually are more precise, but the "bing" AI answer attracts more attention due to its well formulated sentences. Tricky.

Exactly. My significant other spent the early years of her career as a fact checker for various major publications, whose names you would definitely recognize. She actually uses ChatGTP quite a bit these days in her journalism for first pass information gathering, but she constantly stresses that any information from it must be rigorously fact-checked, just like any other source. Echoing Doc's point upthread, ChatGTP also doesn't cite sources particularly well, if at all, so it can be particularly difficult to determine the credibility of results it spews, and there are loads of anecdotes of it simply making up information and citations to fill in blanks.

At least here on the forum, we have a sort of informal "peer review," so facts that are wrong tend to get corrected in the long run by the very knowledgeable members here, but all one has to do is google "Tomioka" on this forum to get numerous examples of various lenses' manufacture being ascribed to them on the flimsiest of evidence, followed by inevitable spikes of prices in those lenses on eBay, to recognize that "facts" given here might be sketchy and/or have some perverse motivations behind them. Nonetheless, even if corrected in later posts/threads, those "facts" get scraped up by ChatGTP, and we have no idea what kind of mechanisms, if any they have to figure out what is correct and what's not or how effective they are. Pile ChatGTP's "hallucinations" on top of already questionable sources, and serious questions about its usefulness for lens info research are inevitably going to arise.

So yeah, garbage in, garbage out, as always.

Looks like ChatGPT newby member was confused or frightened by the reception he/she/it got in the forum. No more comments, neither a shot of the dog? It's a pitty, as once figuring under its proper name, the machine could give an intersting point of reference (even when it gives wrong indications).
