Theoretically I know it makes perfect sense since the speeds are on a logarithmic scale, but in practice it still amazes me how every additional half-stop adds to the size of the lens once you get to these focal lengths and speeds. _________________ Mark

These go for around 1k today. At 3k, the modern Mitakon would be a (slightly) better alternative.
Made by Komine and sold under all kinds of lower class brand names (Berolina, Carl Meyer Speed*, IKA, Vivitar (*brand name of Burke & James, Chicago - no relation to Hugo Meyer Görlitz nor Carl Zeiss!)). Sharpness moderate to terrible (CA, strong glow, low contrast; 24 lp/mm in the centre wide-open, increasing only to 28 by f/2. . "According to a review published in a 1967 issue of Camera 35 magazine, the lens sacrifices resolving power to gain the extra two stops over an f/2.8 lens, but the result is better than that from shooting at f/2.8 and pushing development by two stops."

Terrible bokeh (fan/block shaped highlights, glow)

@ kathala: Thanks for that information! Not surprising to me since around 2012 I had been testing half a dozen of 1.8/135mm lenses. Apart from the Zeiss ZA 1.8/135mm (then a modern and very good lens) all other were vintage lenses from the1970s (1980s?), and none of those old 1.8/135mm was good enough to spark some interest.

Looking at the lens, it seems to be a large format barrel, so adapting is quite the endeavour, already in terms of flange distance - you probably need a very long tube, but then again, that would be the aim of someone adapting this lens, I guess? SN puts it in 193o, so I wouldn't bet the sharpness is much better. Anyway, thanks for pointing to it; I put it on my little list of fastest lenses docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1WKzZoHmyEaVV18iuB7oP-CcAxf_QLwAYhyL-vjYFIBE _________________ Photography Reference Tables:

There are similar articles about the other famous Zeiss Jena lenses:

Biogon: http://artaphot.ch/images/Technik/Zeiss/Biogon/FS144_History_ZeissBiogon_150dpi.pdf
I have tried various tranlation engines; sadly neither google translate nor yandex will result in a meaningful translation.
Deepl is quite abit better, but still far from accurate.

@stevemark, I loved the one I had in the noughties on an 8 MP APS-H SLR, especially for theatre work (giving 2oo mm). Outside in sunlight, it was quite murky, and on a modern camera, it's probably more of a soft portrait gimmick. What I've seen, today I'd buy a Sigma Art, but on FF, I feel no need for the focal length at all. _________________ Photography Reference Tables:

Sure there are interesting application for such a lens ... when I was testing those 3rd party 1.8/135mm back then I though they might be nice for some portraits. Personally I pretty much like the Canon nFD 2/135mm as well as the Minolta MD-III 2/135mm. Both (at f2) are somehow soft at f2 (but with lots of detail), and contrast/flaring is better (for my kind of shooting) than with those 3rd party 1.8/135mm lenses.
Lenses such as MinAF 1.4/85 (let alone the Zeiss CY 1.4/85 or the Canon nFD 1.2/85) have too much purple fringing / too narrow depth of field / too low contrast wide open, and I prefer longer focal lengths for portraits anyway. MinAF 2/100mm has a relatively high contrast and low fringing wide open (better than Canon nFD 2/100). But that's clearly off topic now ...
