While most information published on artaphot deals with Minolta gear (MF and AF), I have accumulates lots of useful knowledge about many MF lenses from other manufacturers as well. Most of this information never was published. Apart from the Konica section - which I have upgraded in 2021 - much remains to be done, especally in the field of Canon FD/newFD and Nikkor MF lenses.
Thanks to the outstanding collection of a good collector friend I recently have been able to take images of and with most Canon FD and nFD lenses. For time being, just these images (and some lens sections) are being published in the new artaphot "Canon FD" section. I hope I soon may be able to publish some in-depth and first-hand information about these beautiful masterpieces of lens design - especially about the rarer and more obscure lenses that are very difficult to find these days.
CANON FD/nFD LENSES (new / work in progress) http://www.artaphot.ch/canon-fd/fd-lenses
I also will publish all the previous vintage lens tests on artaphot - and hopefully some future test as well. Future tests and comparisons will NOT be published on mflenses any more, for reasons most of you are aware of.
Finally here the links to already existing lens pages on artaphot:

MINOLTA ROKKOR LENSES (SR/MC/MD) http://www.artaphot.ch/minolta-sr/objektive
MINOLTA AF LENSES http://www.artaphot.ch/minolta-sony-af/objektive
At some point also information on Nikkors and Leica R glass will follow, comparing those classics to less famous lenses from other manufacturers.

Looking forward to this- especially anything you can do with the nikkor line.
Some of the early canon FD lenses had quite interesting rendering- especially in "sweet" light.

It is a very good (and attractively formatted) site indeed; for many years already one of my favourite go-to sites for info on Minolta lenses (it helps that I understand German).

Is this my birthday?
Artaphot is love, artaphot is life. This is like a birthday present for me.
Since i'm a real Canon FD nerd, let me point some observations with the aim of making your site more complete:
1. FD 28/3.5
You're missing the Canon FD 28/3.5, which really has two optical systems.
The first inherits the one from the FL 28/3.5 lens, 7 elements.
The revised optical system has 6 elements and the change was done, apparently, after the chrome nose era. That is, the "S.C" versions have it.
A very nice lens, btw.
2. The FD 35/3.5 has two optical versions, markedly different.
http://www.artaphot.ch/canon-fd/fd-lenses/455-canon-fd-35mm-f35
The first one comes from the Chrome Nose days and is the one depicted on your page. This lens often is found with haze and schneideritis.
The second one (around 1975) is a lighter lens and the optical scheme is down to only 5 elements. It is readily recognized by its beveled rear lens holder. It's a great performer, very contrasty and sharp.
3. The mighty 35/2.0 series
http://www.artaphot.ch/canon-fd/fd-lenses/454-canon-fd-35mm-f2
You can get more info here, there are many variations:
https://www.bing.com/newtabredir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.lummukka.com%2Fcanonfd35.html
Not mentioned there, but the very very first 35/2 chrome nose lenses have a single helicoid for the floating system, and thus the barrel is narrower, while the following chrome nose version has a thicker barrel and uses a dual helicoid.
I had the optical scheme of the Convex 35/2.0 SSC, but i've lost it. It is very close to the diagram of the FDn 35/2.0
4. Diagram for the 85/2 Soft is here:
https://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/companies/canon/fdresources/fdlenses/85mmsoft.htm
5. FD 135/3.5
http://www.artaphot.ch/canon-fd/fd-lenses/552-canon-fd-135mm-f35
This lens also went through several versions, the chrome nose version is a sonnar design of 4/3 type.
Around 1975 the lens changed totally in optical design (and barrel design) and now uses a 4/4 diagram very similar to the one used on the Nikon AI/AI-S 135/3.5, another great lens.
The New FD 135/3.5 uses the very same 4/4 design and it's remarkably light.
6. Chrome nose 55/1.2.
I've observed a change in coatings on the FD 55/1.2 CN, the early ones seem to have exactly the same coatings as the FL 55/1.2, and the later chrome nose lenses seem to have SSC coating, same as the FD 55/1.2 SSC version.
7. Canon FD 50/1.8
There are way too many versions of this lens.
The chrome nose 50/1.8 distinguishes itself by having 6 diaphragm blades and all the lens element have threades retainers. The coatings have a different hue and look nicer than subsequent versions.
The long nose 50/1.8 SC is a bit cheapened down in construction. From here on, they use 5 diaphragm leaves.
Somewhere around mid -70s the 50/1.8 SC uses a sealed front assembly (holding 1st and 2nd groups) that is almost impossible to diassemble.
The late "pancake" 50/1.8 SC is physically different and is also cheapened down from the previous version.
The FDn 50/1.8 (1979) has updated coatings compared to the previous one, the earlier ones (1979) have a bit better construction than the later ones. I have reasons to believe the optical design has been recomputed here, and it might even have been recomputed on the previous versions too.
The FDn 50/2 is reputed to be a restricted FD 50/1.8, however the coatings look completely different. Perhaps it was outsourced (?)
8. FD 50/1.4
The optical scheme looks identical on the FD versus New FD version, however they have been recomputed. One source for corroborating this is http://web.archive.org/web/20031008080855/http://www.imx.nl:80/photosite/japan/CanonFD/FD50.html Erwin Puts' test of both lenses.
In any case, the out of focus rendition of the FD 50/1.4 SSC and the FDn 50/1.4 will differ to a trained eye, so they are definitely recomputed.
I have also reasons to believe the FD 50/1.4 chrome nose was recomputed for the FD 50/1.4 SSC version, mainly due to the OOF performance. The Chrome Nose version has harsh bokeh. Gary Reeese's Canon FD lens tests showed different distortion profiles for the chrome nose FD version versus the FD SSC version, another reason to believe they were recomputed.
Anyways, thanks Steve! |

On the 50mm f/1.4 section of the Puts item, the following quote should be approached with caution;
"Both are not stellar performers, even if Canon indicates these to be their main lenses as referece (sic) for the rest."
Although the copy suggests more, Canon only specifically cite the 50/1.4 as a reference for colour rendering. The relevant quotes below from the FD editions of Lens Work, the first from the tech section at the beginning, second from the lens description.
"The FD 50mm f/1.4 is the standard by which all other Canon lenses are measured for color rendition."
"Canon's most famous standard lens is the FD 50mm f/1.4 lens. It has an excellent reputation for high performance thanks to its stable image reproduction capabilities. Pictures come out crisp and sharp with high resolution. This lens is now being used for optical measurements at various public institutions and is also the standard which determines color balance for the rest of the almost 60 lenses in the FD lens series. Perhaps instead of "standard', a more accurate name would be "reference" lens." |

No problem here (I'm in France as well). Maybe the lack of a SSL certificate (https instead of http) makes it impossible for you to access. _________________ Personal website : https://volkergilbertphoto.com
