Got this lens recently, waiting for macro season ) It's adaptall model, so it's mount can be changed.
Lens is showing nice sharpness, the only thing i don't like is it's perfomance against bright light even with hood.

I exactly am considering whether it its worthy to obtain that lens (with the matched convertor) for $160.

Is it worthy to have it as the general purpose 100mm lens for the common use?

Because for the macro I already have enough options.

I've owned my copy of this lens (52B) for over 30 years. It has always been one of the sharpest lenses in my lens assortment. Some people complain about the blue spot, which is caused by the lens's flat rear element. Me, I don't notice it, I find it to be so light.

I think the Tamron 90mm is a very handy 100mm range lens, not just because of its sharpness, but because it is not slow like so many other macros. Having that f/2.5 maximum aperture gives the photographer options to play around with a narrow depth of field that isn't possible with other 100mm (or so) macros. It also seems to be very well corrected. I haven't noticed any objectionable aberrations.

I think $160 with converter is a fair price, perhaps a bit on the high side, provided they are both in excellent condition. I'm curious about that "matched converter" that you mention, LittleAlex. Do you know how it is different from the SP 2x teleconverter? I bought my 52B without teleconverter, but I added both the 1.4x and 2x TCs to my Tamron collection over the years. They seem to work just fine with the 52B, and of course, the 2x allows the 52B to focus down to 1:1.

Nice photos.
I am also thinking about buying one of these.

I've tried it with Vivitar/Tokina 90/2.5 matched macro converter. Looks like there is a bit of sharpness loss.

It is exactly that convertor:

The lens, which I look for is really 52bb. But essentially it is the same lens, as I understand. It has the adaptal mount II for Nikon, which for me is rather good. Because my Nikon adapters have the presets for closing on the diaphragm on the lens.

Accordingly to the pictures they are. And there is also the native hood. Anyway I also believe it is little too uppish price. So, I am considering yet.

Nice thing. However, the native to your system macro tubes might be used as well.

Well, it is inevitable anyway. The main point is then what kind of bit it is. And in what proportion the native convertor will be better (if it would) then any other decent thing. There exist very complicated 7 lens convertors today for the general use. Which might be used instead the native dedicated one.

The 01F you show above is the standard Tamron SP 2x teleconverter. It is "only" 6 elements, but it is as good as, or better than, other 7-element converters I've used. I've found mine to provide excellent performance. Image degradation is from negligible to non-existent.

I've never seen one of those Tamron extension tubes. Since you mention you can use the Nikon mount, there is a pretty wide assortment of Nikon and aftermarket Nikon-mount extension tubes that have been made over the years. If you know how long that Tamron tube is (I don't), you can probably find a Nikon tube that will come close to matching it.

Yes, I already have the whole set for Nikon, however the cheaper one – with the screw tubes inside. It is not quite convenient as the native one, but steel quite usable.
However, because the convertor is included into the sailing set:

so, I have to consider also its usability.

Is true! The dedicated tube has adapatall-2 mounts both ends for less adapter stacking. I know they exist because I had one!

2X TC adds 2 stops. Question: how many stops added for clear tube?

I suddenly discovered, that the matched convertor might suffer from some internal evaporation (possibly – of lubrication), which pollutes the optic inside:

Quite alarming, doesn’t it? Shocked

The problem however is that is has 10 (!) the glass-to-air surfaces:

Which has to have the considerable effect upon the general contrast. Leaving alone the plasticity of the final image.

I have obtained the lens (52BB) with the matched FLAT-FIELD 2X TELE-CONVERTER Model 01F.

To start with I decided to compare it with the modern N-AF Kenco TELEPLUS MC7 AF 2x teleconverter (7 lenses inside).

Kenco was much, really MUCH better upon all settings. No comparison at all.

However, I discovered, that the optical block is very easily unscrewed out of the tube, converting it exactly into the Extension Tube 18F (45mm length). So, the teleconverter really is “two in one set”. Then, I didn’t lost much with that set bay. Laugh 1
