It seems to me that it is not as sharp as it could be... right?

I have this lens, my copy is not sharp even if I stop down, I noticed the same thing also in this picture before you wrote. It is really an old lens. At the time, when it was designed (end of the 50s), its sharpness was enough. Today we have other standards. But the good thing about this lens is, it does not flare, which is amazing if you consider that it's not multicoated.

Yes, it can be more sharp.

Look at this, closer subject. Sharp enough I guess.
