Canon C/Y lens exposure issues

Hey, I have a few C/Y lenses I like to use on my 5D Mark III. Zeiss Sonnar 135mm f2.8 and ML 50mm f2. I can get infinity focus, but the AF confirm chip on my adapter doesn't work on my new body like it used to on my 7D, so I removed it. On both cameras I can't get consistent exposures when stopping the lens down. Wide open they expose ok, sometimes underexposed a little. But then when I start stopping them down they overexpose like crazy. Is there a trick to nailing the exposure rather than just taking a bunch of test photos? I much prefer OVF shooting, although magic lantern focus peaking and exposure preview in live view is nice.

When I had these issues before on my 7D I read forum postings suggesting to change the metering mode, and that the issues were somehow related to the crop sensor. I was hoping they would work better on my new full frame body. I've got some decent L zooms and a canon 50 1.4 so I haven't been in the worlds biggest hurry to get this figured out but I would really like to have these creative C/Y primes working well.

Does anyone have experience with how well the 5DIII focus confirmation works? It was just ok on my 7D, wondering if it will be worth the money to get a better adapter that has a chip that supports this camera. Wanted a better focus screen but the only ones available for the mark III are custom ones and they are quite expensive.

Many thanks,

Jeff

I was for 20 years an CONTAX RTSIII and AX shooter, with an good row of C/Y Zeiss lenses. As I bought me an Canon 5D MkII body, I have noticed that the camers mirror was bouncing on the rear part of my Zeiss glasses! Finally, I have an good old friend an camera/lens repair specialist, who has shortend the camera mirror perfectly for me, for all of my C/Y Zeiss lenses! I've used this combo for a couple of years without any problems! Then I've moved over to SONY cameras, and could sold the CANON 5D MKII body for an fair price to someone interest to get an Canon 5D MKII with an shortend mirror!

To shortend the camera mirror on an CANON 5D MkII body is possible, but is still an very special task, so better think about it!

Hey,
much thanks for your reply, however I don't seem to be having any mirror issues with the two lenses I have at least. The only problem I'm having is inconsistent metering/auto exposure. Did you use full manual exposure on your 5D? Was the exposure correct or often need compensation?

Welcomne mccabe808!

Sounds like the lens aperture is not closing. When on the camera can you see aperture open/close when operating the lens aperture ring? If not there is probably a lens lever that can be blocked to keep aperture closed to ring setting...

YES, a few C/Y Zeiss glasses worked fine, but others have the mirror bouncing on the lens tube! That's why I've got the mirror shortend on the camera!

As can be seen, the 1000mm 6x6 combo worked also fine on the CANON 5DMkII! Distance to the castle, approx. 2,5 miles!

As far as I remenber, I have not used full manual exposure often on my 5DII! But I guess, it should not be a problem. The aperture is set, and the metering should show the correct time!

there are endless discussions about that online.
NB: if you check consistency of exposure by comparision shots 1 stop apart. you will recognize old zeiss lenses at f 1.4 will show darker images at f 1.4 i measured(by eye) between 1/3 and 1/2 stop darker. i used first 1/3 stop setting then nailed with 1/2.
2. you need dandelion lushnikov adapter/chip. Have found endless amount of informations.
dont have it yet mounted only once tested on M42-adapter.
Its an endless story how to use. Have other chipped adapters e.g. EMF and optixpcb. Have new EOS 60D, 1000D used before.
Mixed results, one must know how FC is working in which settings.
Biggest found was: Signal only shown when set to Selective. maybe this setting is bound to other function which will be altered when other function is changed.
using in on SRL is another story. some cams dont allow it. e.g- Fotodiox on their adapter(v10 chip but which one) advices not using on SRL could damage cam.
the instructions i found also telling how to use with catadioptic mirrors at f8.couldnt make it running on f 5.6 mirror.
general seller of the dandelion Lushnikov now has shop closed for obvious reasons.
and Nikon-EOS chipped adapter stays in MF. nothing is confirmed. will now get Fotodiox and K +F comfort adapters and will add Dandelion L- EOS-chips. they must be centered otherwise signal is lost. happened in a complete optixpcb. seller gone. he got it back but didnt refund. in other words. betrayed me. highprecision a joke. its standard cheap adapter with special socket. On K+F comfort C/Y-EOS-adapter(very high quality) L-steel must be 0.3mm higher to get signal.
