Hi all,

Today I bought a Unitax 70-230mm f/4 Macro MC in Olympus OM mount for a mere €10. I don't have any information on it, except the specs written on the lens itself. It looks like a typical Japanese rebrand and looks a lot like the Vivitar 70-210 Series 1 v.2 as shown here, second from the left

Which makes me wonder if this Unitax is a Tokina made lens? The only similar lens I found online is the Deitz 70-230mm f/4 but that doesn't ring a bell to me either.

Some pictures of the lens itself:

The lens is f/4 over the entire focal length an has 6 aperture blades. Pull to zoom. Macro gear goes to 1:3. Weight without caps is approx. 810gr., height is 17cm.

I haven't had the chance to actually use it because the OM-EFM adapter has yet to arrive. But for this price I just wanted to give the lens a try.

I'm very interested in any information you can come up with!

After scouring the internet a bit more, especially sites such as eBay, I found that it probably is a lens made by Sun: https://www.ebay.com/itm/332396376415

Besides that, I can't find much on the lens. The focal length, 70-230mm is also a bit odd. As soon as the adapter arrives, I will post some photos.

All I can find that looks like it is a Deitz MC 70-230mm f4.0 https://www.ebay.com/itm/113179558006 Here is one that says Sun http://lens-club.ru/lenses/item/c_5172.html But the chrome ring at the Bottom is very Tokina.

So I had the Unitax for a couple of days now and took 500+ photos with it to test it. Mostly doubles to rule out motion blur or the same subject on different apertures.

Mounted on the puny Canon M50
The collection

My findings so far:

    - it's big and it's heavy.
    - MFD of 2.5m, which was quite normal for a zoom back then
    - Small focus throw of approx. 110 degrees, making it challenging to precision focus
    - Soft at f/4 but sharpens quite a lot stopped down. Usable from f/6.3 onwards
    - Macro gear reduces the MFD of the lens to 42cm @70mm. Stopping down in macro is a must, because it is very, very, very soft and hazy at f/4 and 5.6. Sharp at f/8 onwards
    - Corners stay behind in sharpness
    - Doesn't hesitate to show a bit CA

but somehow I quite like the lens. It adds some range to my collection, with the MOG Orestor 135mm being the biggest upto now.
