I was Googling something today and made a surprising discovery. Google books has indexed almost all of the vantage issues of Popular Photography magazines! I am sure this has been there before but I didn't see this until today.
Here is the link: http://books.google.com/books?id=rzH31j84pn8C&source=gbs_all_issues_r&cad=1
Issues from 1980 - 2005. Fully view-able.
I am going to see how deep the rabbit hole is. Maybe I can find modern photography there as well. _________________ Follow me on 500px

For modern ones you can try issuu.com, but their search is not very helpful.

Google did it. Google has an on-going project to scan everything ever published and post it on the web.

Fascinating. Would it be fair to say that this is a consumer, rather than a pro mag? Lots of ads for Tamron, Kiron, Vivitar zooms, or Nikon E series, stuff that pros probably would not have touched.
Would be nice to see some UK archive, just to see some price lists from when I first started wishing I had enough to buy something that fancier than a Praktica MTL3 (not that it was a bad camera…) |

Well, back when I paid attention to Pop Phot and Modern Photography, Pop Phot was the dumbed down version of Modern. Both were vehicles for advertising aimed at the mass market but Modern's columns, articles and equipment tests were at a higher level. BJP used to be at a much higher level than either. |

I found these while googling some info on Rokkor zooms the other day. A bunch of the 80s ones have an old-skool ad from a camera shop with all the prices of the different lenses in a giant list. I converted some of the prices with inflation adjust and really, the lenses tend to be between $300 and $800 in today's dollars which isn't so different from today! _________________

Thanks, that's certainly a lot easier then using the snipping tool!
The snipping tool does encourage you to be more selective in what you keep though |

Yes -- I (a big fan of Modern Photo) fully concur.
I would personally love seeing Modern Photography archived by Google, and would also like it if coverage (of either mag) went further back in time (into the 1970's, say) as well. _________________ Fred
