I picked one up in a box of other stuff and it is focusing WAY past infinity. It will focus at infinity only if you set it to what should be the MFD at 320mm. Everything else is varying degrees of out of focus.

Someone has obviously been inside this lens in the past so I assume something is either backwards or in the wrong place but I can't find a lens diagram anywhere. It's one of the first zoom lenses ever and doesn't seem to follow the more modern designs that I'm somewhat familiar with the innards of--though 90% of my lens repair has been on MF primes or large format so who knows if I'm right.

I've flipped the two easily accessible elements around in all possible configurations to no avail. The focusing is done, it appears, by the single front element. Nothing else moves when you operate the focus. I've adjusted it as far in and out as possible without fixing anyone as well.

If anyone has experience with these, or any insight into the design, or insight into the problem, please let me know.

Welcome, Arees.

Sounds like an interesting lens! Have you seen this ebay listing?
Click here to see on Ebay

The seller is offering a prototype Zoomar 170-320mm lens along with a booklet of technical drawings. Maybe they would be willing to sell you copies of the drawings?

Friedrich W Voigt wrote a small book in 1968 on dr.F,G Backs f4 Kilfitt macro zoomar and its dedicated 2x extender it focusses down to 18cm from the front of the lens and gives 1;2 without the converter. witrh 17 elements it does not look like a device suited to non spcialist surgery.

I did see that one, but I haven't gotten a response from the seller.

That's a different lens, and much more complicated than mine is.
