hello my friend,My aperture doesn't show a number,Can only be estimated approximately

I'll use a max1.7 for close ups

and then, when I was shooting a long shot, I watched the viewfinder grow dark, about F8, and then I pressed the shutter

Hi,

Where is the aperture placed in this, and how was that decided? I'd like to pursue something with a similar copy, so if it wasn't just at the front or back I'm intrigued to know.
