We cannot always manage to handle multiple lenses on our outings and a macro lens is often missing. Some lenses allow for interesting short distance focusing. The Minolta 70 210 F4 zoom is one of them. Not the best bokeh. Not the sharpest. But certainly one of the best combinations of sharpness and bokeh.

In addition to that, the MD 4/70-210 (as well as the Minoltra AF 4/70-210 which has the same optics) are vignetting strongly at MFD / f=210mm / f4. While this usually is a problem, for real world macro photos (flowers, small animals) it emphasizes the subject (which very often is placed in or near the center). I'ven been using the AF 4/70-210mm a lot for such images back in 1987.

Agree. But the differences aren't huge - only visible when taking images side-by-side. And the price difference is ... astonishing. The Minolta AF 4/70-210mm in "like new" condition is available here regularly for <10 CHF. Sometimes an auction starting at CHF 1.-- ends without bidder. I bought my CY Vario Sonnar 4/80-200 for about CHF 120.--, as far as I remember.
Besides this, the Canon nFD 4/80-200mm L has much less CAs (both lateral and longitudinal) than the Zeiss CY 4/80-200mm. Less sharp corners, though, unless you stopn down to f8 ... f11.
Another nice zoom is the Nikkor AiS 4/80-200mm. Large, heavy, and similar performance as the Minolta 4/70210mm.
