Quite a rare lens I think.
M37 or M42 mount?
Tom

Nice images from the very rare 83mm f1.9 - a classic Sonnar design! Great collection of early Takumars! Bravo!

I just saw one go on liveauctioneers.com for €320. I guess that is cheap. I wouldn't say it is a classic sonnar. It's design is a little to complicated for that:

Yeah, the only Sonnar Takumar is the 1:2/58

Yes, I agree, I should have said Sonnar-type.

Here are the lens formulas for the original Sonnar design of 1932, and then the Asahi interpretations of the design employed in the 58mm f/2 and 83mm f/1.9

Sonnar 50mm f/1.5

Takumar 83mm f/1.9

Takumar 58mm f/2

Are you saying that this takumar line was built and marketed to flatter the sonnar design or that is just a lens with a cemented triplet up front?

No. Why would you think that?

Consensus is it is a Sonnar design.

Gerjan shows a lens diagram different from the PentaxForums diagram. Gerjan's drawing shows camera side of third and sixth element are more concave and convex, respectively.

Maybe I should have said "Sonnar Type" too?

Frank Mechelhoff's excellent website on early Takumar lenses notes this on the 58mm f/2:

"G.v.Oosten shows a slightly different diagram in his book, but my lens too has a flat rear element like the one of Kensetsu's camera collection HP

This was the second standard lens for the 1957 Asahi Pentax of a complete other family: A Sonnar (cemented triple). The focal length had to be enlarged to 58mm (small rear distance of that type). To my knowledge it is the only SLR Sonnar type standard lens. Rarer than the Asahiflex lens of the same focal length."
