Canon FD 200/2.8

Want to share photos with this nice lens. I have nFD version with internal focusing.
Images looks good for me, there are a lot of CA wide open, but the sharpness is ok. Hard to nail proper focus also sometimes )

I like that bokeh. And the lens itself looks a nicely engineered thing in itself.


With the trend being for turning bodies of water into surreal dreamscapes, it's refreshing to see that bow wave as the duck (female Mallard?) ploughs on, in the last pic.

Great photos, and great examples of what the lens can do.

I owned the nFD Canon 200/2.8 for several years and had a love/hate relationship with it. I discovered that CAs could be a real problem with it, especially with hard lines against a fairly bright background -- red and green CAs everywhere. But in other situations, it was simply incredible. So, after I sold it, I missed it. I finally acquired another example last year. It's nice having one again.

Now I got Nikkor 180/2.8 Ais ED and that lens really rocks. In terms of aberations is well corrected. Dunno how it compares to this nFD 200/2.8 IF.

I've owned the Nikkor 180/2.8 ED as well as the Canon, and I found the Nikon to be way more useful than the Canon because of how well it controlled CAs. I believe it is sharper as well. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that the Nikon 180 ED I used to own was the sharpest prime I've ever owned -- with the possible exception of the Canon 85/1.2 Aspherical I own now. Close call.

Well, Canon 85/1.5 Aspherical must be top notch glass. From my thoughts Nikkor 180/2.8 ED is versatile and for my purposes while I am using for interior concert shots lately suits me more that good. Maybe I would gladly to try it for exterior portrait and more on film, too.

Back in the 80s and early 90s, I was a freelance motorsports photographer, and the Canon 200/2.8 was one of my favorite lenses for this application. Following are a few duplicates from slides I shot back in those days. The photo of the man and woman was actually taken at a race. They were a pair of corner workers at an SCCA race at Willow Springs Raceway, California.
