Hi!

I've recently bought a Porst 75-260 mm f4.5 lens with close focus, it is my first m42 zoom. It feels solidly built, rather heavy (almost 900 gr) with a smooth focus ring but a rather hard to turn zoom. I’ve brought it with me yesterday for a walk along the river but it was a bit a disappointment.

Allegedly it is a rebranded Tokina and looking online I’ve found rather positive reviews. It’s my first m42 zoom so I’m not sure if I got a faulty one or it’s just the way this kind of lenses perform: I’ve found it unusable wide open without any detail and very pronounced purple fringing.

I took the time to compare it with a Hanimar 135 Auto ‘S’ 135mm f2.8 at home, not exactly a lens regarded as a good performer and the difference is rather evident. The Porst @260 mm is so bad I'm better just cropping the pictures from the 135 mm Hanimar. Did I get an unlucky copy or it’s supposed to be like this? I've taken the pictures with a APS-C camera.

Welcome, anamu!

I think you'd be very fortunate to find a 3rd party zoom from that era which had good sharpness and low fringing at wide open. And I think it's expected that sample variation is high among older lenses, too - especially for zooms because of their complex construction.

Tokina made a lot of lovely lenses, but my own copy of the 75-260 close focusing has been a disappointment to me. It's not as sharp as I'd hoped.

I have the silver eared Soligor variant of that lens and I am pretty pleased with it's performance. Not bad for an old lens and exquisite build quality, from a time zooms were not made for the masses yet.

Thanks for the answers! I'll try to make the best of it, it does behave better when with closer subjects. (sorry for the username change, I lost the password and I wasn't able to reset it). The close focus is also fun to use.

What camera are you using? It can be hard to get focus right at longer distances.
