There are some lenses 55m F/1,4 with 7 elements in 5 groups
The Pancolar, Mamiya, Cosina, Tomioka (first only), Sears, , Zeiss Contarex, are among them.
The Nikon (S and SC) in the 50/1,4 lenses have the same scheme
Are they in the same league?
Sharpness, contrast, colors, bokeh...any of the named lenses has the edge? |

The Pancolar is clearly the most sought after and the prices reflect that.
Also, from the results that I have seen, it is a clear step ahead of the others in performance.
There is a 5cm f2 lens of seven elements which is quite magical, the Nikkor S 5cm f2.
It isn't common but renders most marvellously.
Here is a review:

I looked for that Nikkor for a long time. Never found it.
So the H was my purchase.
IT did a good job. The H os a good lens, and the HC should be better, I guess |

Others to consider which are exceptionally good in my experience are mostly 50mm, and I am unsure if they are seven element lenses.
However:
RE Auto Topcor 58mm f1.4 (the basis for the current Voigtlander Nokton)
Canon FL 55mm f1.4
Yashinon DX 50mm f1.4
AUS Jena Prakticar 50mm f1.4 first edition (nearly as good as the Pancolar 55mm)
Auto Miranda 50mm f1.4 (superb lens, may actually have 8 elements in one variant, 7 in the other)
Super Takumar 50mm f1.4 (7 or 8 elements, both wonderful)

The Yashinon DS-M 50/1,4 is the same as the DX-1,4?
Both with same IQ? |

i like to use the nikon S 50/1,4 for event photography - as i understand it, it was essentially the primary photojournalism lens of the 60s and 70s, and it really does somehow make ordinary event photos look like news. |

Hmmm, not sure.
The DS-M is supposed to have better coatings, but the DX lenses appear to be better built.
I think the DX had mirror clearance issues at infinity on some cameras (Canon 5D) maybe the DS-M did as well, I don't know.
Not this lens, but some other DS lenses that I have seen didn't seem as good optically as the DX. I have not used a DS or DS-M 50mm f1.4 so can't say.

Apparently there is also a Volna 50mm 1.4 (actually 53mm). Can't find any samples though.

Nobody mentioned the Minolta MD 50mm/F1.4 in the first series so far. It's the same enhanced Xenon type with 7 lenses in 5 groups.
BTW, the Minolta MC 58mm/F1.2 shares the same construction scheme. _________________ Thomas Bernardy

Most of the faster normals do share common heritage so they do often share qualities.

Most common designs these days is is a derivative of or based on Double-Gauss https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double-Gauss_lens You'll find many of the recommended lenses in this thread here fall into this family
1936–1964: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/75/DoubleGauss2text.svg
1964–1977: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/da/DoubleGauss3text.svg
1978–2010: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/92/DoubleGauss4text.svg
I'm kind of partial to these lenses for their rendering

That Nikkor really does seem to be special, unfortunately for me, I'm not a huge fan of the reverse focus direction, all my Nikkor and Takumar's get neglected because of that, so I find it hard to justify buying any of them these days, a shame really. _________________ A Manual Focus Junky...
