IMO, that notion comes from thinking about portraits in terms of headshots mostly. It is true that they may not be very flattering very close (that depends also on face orientation and other factors) but they can be excellent for portraits of people in their spaces. The 1 meter min focusing distance of Jupiter 12 actually puts you in the right distance, and it's not just a limitation
