Hi folks

I'm working on a 24x58 panoramic camera to shoot 35mm film. I have discovered that the Jupter-8 2/50 actually has a 62mm image circle and the Helios 44 2/58 has a 65mm image circle, so those will cover 24x58 (62.7mm image circle) but I'd like to use a wider lens, 35mm focal length would be okay, 28mm would be even better.

So I'm wondering, does anyone happen to know of any such lenses that would have a suitably large image circle when stopped down to f8-f11?

How about the PC-Nikkor 28?

Your format size is almost half height 645 format

so why not one of these ? pretty wide in that format

PC-Nikkors are too expensive.

I already have a Mamiya 645 45mm I could use, not as wide as I would like.

Hi Ian,
The Pentax SMC 645 A 35mm F 3.5 would do it but is quite expensive(400-600$). I have it and it's a good lens, quite sharp stopped down a little. The newer FA 35mm is even better but for a double price. I read on older forums that it was preferred by Canon users to some Canon 35mm more expensive lenses as being sharper and with less distortions.
Of course any 645/6x6 lens would have great enough image circle and you could find cheaper ones from some vintage 645/6x6 systems.
With the exception of the tilt/shift lenses I never heard of a 35mm FF lens with such a great image circle.

Hi Dan

Looks like the Mamiya 45mm I have will have to do the job then. I was hoping a 35mm format lens might cover at small apertures.

The Occams razor solution of using a lens you already have is noble.

But since you want to shoot at tiny aperture, maybe - just maybe you need a 2x teleconverter and a UWA lens . I am not sure but maybe the TC will double the image circle

It's an interesting project. Your Mamiya lens would leave place for some movements, too.
How do you intend to make that camera?
Are you adapting some film back made for a 6x6 camera or use an old folder?
How do you intend to make the frame counter work?

35mm camera with the gate widened. Two strokes of the advance lever instead of one.

I'll post details soon.

Hi ,

Any updates ? I found a post in another forum where the same methodology has been used, perhaps with a different camera than what you've been working with.

Thanks

Pentax 67 lenses? I have the 55mm f4 that is amazingly sharp. They have come down considerably and the 55 can frequently be had for under 200.

I decided to go for the 45mm for my Pentax 67. It is also a very sharp lens, and does a great job of capturing images when you need that extra field of view.

Keep us posted. It seems an intriguing project.

Maybe the Jupiter-12 35mm? At least they are cheap and common. It's a symmetric lens.

Just wondering if you remove a large part of the film gate, will film flatness be any issue?
