The 45mm f/2 Rokkor is a really nice lens optically. I did a few quick comparisons to my 45mm Zeiss Tessar. At infinity the Rokkor has slightly better resolution, but is a little less contrasty than the Zeiss. I am not a fan of a five blade aperture, however. _________________ Best wishes,

I have 4 different 40mm lenses at this moment.
The Zeiss Biotar 40mm 2.0 in Robot-mount would be the least recommended, I don't really like the ergonomics.
For very cheap, you can get the tiny Lomo Triplet 40mm 4.0, M39-mount, delivers nice colours + vintage rendering, and can be had very cheaply (it comes from the Smena camera) Not sure about minimum focus distance though, I think 1 meter, but a helicoid adapter can help here.
There's the Pentax-M 40mm 2.8 pancake, but like the minlota 45, it also has 5 aperture blades, so probably you will not like that either.
Above your budget is the Summicron-C 40mm. With patience, it can be found around $350 or so. There's also a Minolta (near-) twin of this lens, but that is not super-cheap either. |

Simple question: why 40-45mm? If 45mm is OK, i would not hesitate to accept a lens in the 50mm range. And if 40mm is OK, why not a 35mm (those SLR 35mm lenses often are closer to to 36mm or even 37mm)?
In both ranges (50mm and 35mm) there are so much more options, some of them having a nice bokeh ...

Nice bokeh would be the Flektogon 2.4/35, imho the best 35mm for bokeh and at close distances such as people shots it's superb. _________________ I don't care who designed it, who made it or what country it comes from - I just enjoy using it! |

Canon EF STM 40mm 2.8 if you already have an MC-11 adapter or similar. 1' minimum focusing distance. Circular 7 blades diaphragm. Hybrid Plasmat/Double-Gauss optical design.
Better than the compact lens Canonet 45mm 1.9 lens converted for EF.

this lens is pretty expensive since many years, at least in europe. I sold mine for 350e 6 years ago
all vintage lenses become more and more expensive since 5/6 years because of mirroless i think |

Good question. ) A good versatile 35mm focal. My fixes only Loxia 35mm. For me it is easy to ride but when it comes to everyday images of its side I don't like. Although I often use the 50mm , I would like to have something a little wider.
Thank you all for your answers.

Here are two options:
1) STEINHEIL 40mm F3.5 CASSARON (available fairly readily available in your price range in the US in M42 and Exakta mount).
2) KODAK 44mm f/4.5 Anastar from the Flash Bantam (Sony adapter for this lens is readily available on eBay, as are the flash bantam cameos) you can get both for under $70 US and the conversion is fast and simple)

OK, i can understand that somehow - although my preferences are just the other way round: I do use 50mm, but I often prefer a 55mm or a 60mm like the MC 1.2/58 or the MC 1.4/58 (both lenses in reality being around 60mm).
