There's not much on the net about this lens. Some members here have one, there is one old thread with some excellent images started by Luisalegria here: http://forum.mflenses.com/tamron-adaptamatic-21-4-5-1960s-ultrawide-t15900.html

I recently got one, in very nice (nearly new) condition together with the 105mm f/2.5 JOG-25au.

As there are not much pictures made with one of the 21's on full-frame i'd like to add some of my experimental shots (Sony A7), so here you go:

1. f/8
Home (Tamron 21mm) by René Maly, on Flickr

2. f/11
Old trees (Tamron 21mm) by René Maly, on Flickr

3. wide open, f/4.5, a lot of vignetting and it shows the un-sharp edges/corners.
The cat says hi! (Tamron 21mm) by René Maly, on Flickr

4. f/11
Kitchen testshot Tamron 21mm by René Maly, on Flickr

5. finally a very un-scientific shot that shows the distortion!

There's a little more info on this lens at adaptall-2.com:

http://adaptall-2.com/lenses/PFJ-45Au.html

The pics look decent. Some softening and distortion in the corners, but not bad.

Photos posted really look good.

They look good indeed. It would be interesting to see the corners.
The A7 series is not supposed to do well with MF ultrawides on the corners, but it may do better with an ancient retrofocus like this.

I may be getting a full frame Pentax K1, maybe if prices come down after the new year.
I can't believe that thing is still selling at list price.

Well, i have never noticed this, i use Minolta MD 20mm, Tokina RMC 17mm, Tamron SP 17mm. I always thought this problem only accounts for use of rangefinder lenses as they are closer to the sensor than SLR lenses.

Anyone shooting this lens full frame lately? I'd love to see more samples.

The ones you see here are from Sony A7, which is full-frame. If i get some time this week i'll shoot some more if you like!

It's mostly RF lenses that doesn't work well from what I've seen.

The bad retrofocus lenses are probably bad on every camera Wink

Here you go, i took a quick walk around our little village!
These are vivid JPGs from the A7, i only corrected the exposure in LR, generally this Tamron delivers under-exposed pictures. Of course, this is no problem nowadays with digital. You could of course change your settings in camera....

It has quite strong vignetting when it's not stopped down, also the corners aren't sharp. But it's an old lens design, i think it has it's charmes!

Larger files on my flickr account!

Closest focus distance, which is an amazing 20cm!

Extreme crop of the above, enough detail.

Closest focus distance and wide open, f/4.5.

Wide open. Look towards the corners, they're quite bad here, center is still sharp!

This is f/11, wide angle lenses usually are being used stopped down for this kind of photos or landscapes.

Excellent center sharpness, corners just a tiny bit soft but certainly usable, contrast is not top notch either (easily boosted in post). Certainly way better than some other superwides from the era.

Nice results!
I always thought it was a superior lens for what it is, in spite of being so obsolete.
But with that enormous front element it certainly attracts attention !

Hi,

I wanted to ad my contribution

In my opinion, this lens is bad for landscape, very soft, but I really like it for close range - Sony A7 - Novoflex ring
What I like as well, is the sky saturation, it is like having a polarizer on the lens.

Don't look at the black dots, I realize my sensor is hell dirty !

Yes, some lenses are like that - better for closer shots than distant and wide landscapes.
You have been able to get the best from your lens by working to its strengths.
Thanks for sharing
Tom

But that fish surely is not in focus.

After 3 weeks holydays using this lens, I totally love it, and it became one of my favorite.

Focus is smooth and very easy.

For the price I got it (less than 80 euros) it is far usable, the soft corners do not bother me at all, center is really sharp.

This is a great lens.
