This 1990 Sigma is a typical victim of the Zen-coating. The glass-parts however still work as they were meant to work.

Just guessing here, but I think he's referring to the black rubberized (sort of) coating Sigma used on their lenses. Once the lens was a few years old, it would begin to flake off, basically making a big mess, and making the lens look ugly as well.
