i've just won an auction (at reasonable price) for a canon reflex FD 500mm SSC that appears to have a small bit of fungus around the outer edge of the front element - i expect i'll be able to treat it at least partially by putting it out in the sun and/or using my UV flashlight, but my concern is that there may also be fungus on the front mirror, in which case,

does anyone happen to know how to get the front element off of one of these, or have a repair guide?

It's trivial, you unscrew the retaining ring and the front element drops out.
