If anyone has the time to give their valuable input ...

Just wondering which one you would choose if you had to choose between the Olympus 100mm f/2.0 and Nikon 105mm f/1.8, and why?
It's to use with a Sony A7ii.

Thanks!

How about a Laowa STF 105/2.0? Wink

I have looked at it, and seriously considered it, but it's not really an f/2.0 lens in terms of light.
Bokeh is beautiful, but it doesn't gain me any more light than the f/2.8 I already have.

I see. The 100/2 is not cheap but it will be better than the Nikkor in terms of sharpness and portability. The 90/2 macro will be more versatile if you will use the lens for macro too.

Your signature shows OM 100/2.8. Why do you seek another lens in the same focal length just one stop faster?

I'd get an EF 100/2. Same money, probably better IQ, aperture control, and AF, if you'll ever need it.

Two main reasons are extra light and better bokeh. Love the Olympus 100/2.8, but it's bokeh isn't the best, and one extra stop of light is always nice to have when you like to use natural light, particularly with the A7ii which works best up to ISO800.

The OM 100mm f/2.8 has 6 straight aperture blades.
The OM 100mm f/2.0 has 9 slightly-rounded aperture blades.
Nikon 105mm f/1.8 has 9 straight aperture blades.

(That doesn't matter shooting wide open, obviously, but the bokeh of the 100/2.8 is a little rough stopped down.)

Also considered that, but as I have the Techart Pro Leica-EM AF adaptor I can make pretty much any lens AF and I sold my Metabones adaptor a while back.

A little off topic but
The FD 100/2 is exceptional.
Sharp wide and smooth bokeh
Have a pre Ai Nikkor-P which is also very nice, tiny bit slower but prob get one alot cheaper than the FD.
Definately cheaper than the 1.8 105
i've not tried the OM.
Yeah i'm not really helping huh?
Haha

I don't know the Olympus 2/100mm, but i do have the Nikkor 1.8/105mm (and i have used a few other 2/100mm such as MC 2/100, MinAF 2/100mm and FD 2/100mm). The Nikkor is nice, but a bit on the heavy side. Contrast is rather low wide open, but so is the contrast of the FD 2/100mm. The MC 2/100mm has a beautiful bokeh, but detail resolution in the corners is rather low (as one can expect ftom a fast lens which is >50 years old). The MinAF 2/100mm is stunning.

The 100/2 OM is stellar, simple as that, a substantial step up over the 100/2.8 in every way.

While there are many other great ones in this range, nothing will give you quite the same look. Lovely build, with excellent MFD at 0.7m and the handling is great on the A7II.
There is a little CA and veiling flare (like with any older lens) but it is just nit-picking, really.

Nikkor 105/1.8 is best at f2.5, better than Nikkor 105/2.5 at f2.5. It is sharp at f1.8 but some what softer. I haven't OM nor FD, and haven't tested any of them.

I also have DC 105/2. If you prefer nice blurred bokeh, get this one.
Another good one is Zeiss contax 100/2. It is heavier, but what a nice rending.

Around 100mm, I prefer Nikkor 105/2.5, Pentax M 100/2.8, Topcor 100/2.8, or DC 105/2, don't know why, just want to grab any of them.

Thank you all for the advice! It's much appreciated.

I have the om 100/2 but not the nikkor. I haven't used it yet though but for me personally the mfd of 0,7m will be fantastic. The mfd of 1m or 1,2m of my other 100/105mm lenses often annoys me.

The Techart Pro also helps with this, bringing down the MFD even further.
0.7m will likely become < 0.5m.
