Whoa, big difference! Your #3's shots are more typical of what I see with my 23A.

Thanks for taking the time to be so thorough.

I have added pics with a Pentax DAL 55-300mm f4-5.8 zoom to the turret and castle pages. Results corroborate this lens reputation as being surprisingly good, especially the castle pics which show really consistent IQ f4-f11. The turret pics were not so impressive and the lens is slow at only f5.6 eg I thought the 23A #3 is better f5.6 vs f5.6 .

A rose was the subject for another set of test pics for my 70-210mm supertest.
I would tend to marginally favour the kiron zoomlock overall on this one... best "3D".

Kiron zoomlock, 210mm, f8, resized and sharpened.

I just found this thread and all the results you've posted, marcusBMG. Wow. That's a ton of work.
I came across this because I did a comparison of a few zooms I had in this range:

VIVITAR SERIES 1 70-210mm f3.5 (Version 2 Tokina)
VIVITAR 75-205mm 1:3.8 MC Macro Zoom
TOKINA SZ-X 80-200mm f4.5-5.6
TAKUMAR-F 70-210mm f4-5.6

and for comparison

SMC PENTAX DA L 55-300mm 1:4 – 5.8 ED

You can see my comparisons (which aren't nearly as thorough as yours) on the Pentax Forums.
