My latest acquisition arrived today, a Minolta MC Rokkor HF 300mm f/4.5. The thing is a beast! I showed it to my wife and explaining (OK, justifying) the lens by saying that a modern version would cost well over $1000. OK, not apples to apples. That got me thinking about what this lens would have cost new. I did some searching but couldn't find any sources. Does anyone know of such a source as it would be interesting to see how certain lenses have fared value-wise over the years. _________________

For US prices anyway, Google has Popular photography magazine issues, various from from 1938-1957 and all from 1981-2005. _________________ I like Pentax DSLR's, Exaktas, M42 bodies of all kinds, strange and cheap Japanese lenses, and am dabbling in medium format/Speed Graphic work. |

Wow, thanks! I had no idea that the old magazines were available online. I did a quick search and found that the Minolta 300mm f/5.6 sold for about $250 in the early 1980s which would equate to about $770 today. I paid about $70 total for it so I guess I did well by waiting 35+ years to buy it. _________________

I really appreciate the comment about google having Pop Photo online. I've been looking without much success for photo mags from the 80s with their ads. I got started in photography in a serious way in 1982, so it's really cool being able to essentially reminisce. I used to have lots of old photo mags, but at one point threw almost all of them out. Now I wish I would have kept them. _________________ Michael

Any idea why the 1960s and 1970s are not included? _________________

I guess the one I found from the 1980s magazine was a newer version. I plugged $229.95 into an inflation calculator and it came up with an equivalent value of $1,279.73 in today's dollars. Wow. _________________
