The 29 can focus closer though up to 25cm instead of 35 for the 30:

The real focal length of the Pentacon 29mm F2.8 lens is more than 30mm; if I remember well it is about 30.5mm. _________________ If raindrops were perfect lenses, the rainbow did not exist. |

Then why not call it 30? I will test on a tripod.

Maybe they thought that 29mm had more status than 30mm.
The result is that the Pentacon probably is (not sure) the only 29mm lens in the world.
P.S.: A tolerance of ±5% is generally aceptable for declared focal length. _________________ If raindrops were perfect lenses, the rainbow did not exist. |

sure enough 95% of 30.5 is 28.975mm so they couldn't make it 28. There is a Meyer Optik predcessor to this lens. The Meyer-Optik Görlitz Orestegon 29mm/F2.8
Also it was marketed under the Carl Zeiss Jena brand: http://slrlensreview.com/web/reviews/carl-zeiss-lenses-swhorizontalmenu-172/zeiss-wide-angle/397-carl-zeiss-jena-29mm-f28-m42-lens-review
and there is this: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1352322-REG/holga_317120_lens_for_samsung_nx.html if you want to call it a lens. _________________ pentaxian |

I believe that, except for the cosmetics, the Orestegon and the Pentacon 29mm are the same lens. Pentacon was the name that replaced Meyer-Optik Görlitz after an economic reorganization of the optical industry in the former East Germany. _________________ If raindrops were perfect lenses, the rainbow did not exist. |

Field of view.
First 30/3.5 then 29/2.8 Both at F8 and focussed at infinity (the 30/3.5 overshoots infinity on my copy so I focus in live view at full magnification)
As you can see the 29 (unsurprisingly) has a wider FOV than the 30. So if it is 30.5 then the 30/3.5 must be even longer like 32.
I measured the horizontal FOV with Google maps. The 29 is about 135 meters the 30 is about 125 meters. The distance to the houses about a 100 meters but if i calculate the FOV for 29mm should be 124meters. Not so sure about the accuracy of google maps or I got the subject distance wrong.

A Pentacon 200mm F3.5? I've never seen it. The F4 is very common. |
Actually I have one of these and it is Made in Japan. This makes me wonder if it is the same lens as is indicated in the advert.
Does the advert predate the transfer of production of Pentacon lenses from Germany to Japan I wonder?

Some of the lenses mentioned in that ad (the 24mm, 200mm f/3.5, 300mm and 39-80mm) are re-branded Sigma lenses with YS mounts for Praktica EDC. Some later Prakticar lenses were sourced from other Japanese (and eventually Korean) manufacturers. _________________ Dave, HCL |
