Looking for a 35mm

Hey people,

I'm looking for a 35mm (will be used on FF) to do street photography. Do you have any recommendation?

Thanks!

Is lens speed important or not? If you're going to be shooting at "average" apertures (f/11-f/5.6) there's very few 35mm that won't be adequate for your needs. If you need to be shooting wide open then you might have to be a little more picky.

I think the standard reply though would be the Takumar 3.5/35 if m42 is ok. It is easily found, cheap, and a good performer.

Personally the Enna 3.5/35 is my favorite, although usually they're extremely overpriced online. I paid $25 for mine. I would have paid double that though. It is not the sharpest, but it is uniformly sharp across the frame and rendering of color and contrast + the extreme close focus (under a foot) ability make it one of my favorites to use.

I'd love to have great speed if possible as i like to have small DOF.

Perhaps a Carl Zeiss Jena Flektogon 35mm f2.4 if you get a good price on one?

what body are you going to be using it on?

On a NEX-6 for now, and I plan to purchase a A7ii later this year.

I have a MIR 24m. It's 35mm F 2.0. It's not very sharp wide open and quite "boring" but usable.

Minolta MC/MD 1.8/35.

The Nikon 35mm 1.8 gets great reviews and pricing wise it's not a bad choice and the Minolta Calvin mentioned.

The Flektogon is by far the best in the 35ish range that I have. I'm not greatly impressed with the MIR 37 2.8, I prefer the Jupiter 12 35 2.8 to the MIR.

Is it true that the Flek produces bokeh like this?

Are there any difference between these two?

Your second picture is the first generation of Minolta MC series, while the first refers to a later series. However. optical formula should be the same, as the two letters after "Rokkor" in the name indicate number of groups/elements (in this case, 6/8).

Later series usually have better coatings, but the first MC generation is my favourite for look/build quality.

The Carl Zeiss Flektogon 35/2.8 (yes 2.Cool isn't bad either. Here's a shot at f/4 on a Sony A7R:

The nikon 1.8 has been mentioned. I will also say I love my 1.4. I have one of the early pre-AI thorium glass ones with a factory AI conversion (or thats what it looks like). Might get a deal now that there is finally a 1.4 af option and people trade up. I had a nikkor f2.8 as well which was very good if slow and generally uninspiring. The 1.4 has a certain glow wide open but a sharpness underneath. I grew to like its rendering very much but it took time to learn.

I can recommend the MIR-24 lens - I love it, it's currently my second favourite m42 lens, slightly behind my Pentax 50mm. I've also got a Porst 35mm f/2.8 that I quite like too...

I got an MD 35/1.8 recently and have only taken it out once so far (it's winter), but wasn't terribly impressed with the pictures that came back... (I'll give it some more shots)

If the OP don't mention fast, I would suggest this one too. Better than Flek at FF.

There are various Flektogon configurations. I have a 1975 zebra version with a 5 blade iris and a 1955 aluminum tube version with a 12 blade iris. Both good lenses but the bokeh is nicer with the older lens.
