Hi folks

I decided to try this lens out, my copy is in mint condition. No PP at all on these shots, as they came out of camera apart from resizing to 1500x1000.

Firstly, a distant shot close to infinity:

the wide open shots are enough to punish the best of lenses Ian, and as soon as the lens gets to mid range the ca has reduced to a level that I would think has to acceptable from old lenses ?
My knowledge of modern coatings compared to old is minimal, I'm sure there are people here who know more than me, but perhaps the compromises of older lenses have been overcome in the better modern lenses ?

The HMC/RMC coating is supposed to be very good.

I'm surprised at how poor this lens is as my other Hoya/Tokinas I've tried are excellent (2.8 24, 2.8 2Cool so I figured this one would be too.

It seems sharpest in the f5.6-f11 range, gets softer at f16 and partiicularly f22, I think when shot at f8 or f11 this lens would give acceptable results after some PP.

Still not found another 200 to equal or surpass my Pentacon 4/200.

Looks like I need to save some cash then get either a Sonnar 2.8/180 or a Nikkor 2.8/180.

Try Tamron or Mamiya Sekor M42 200/3.5. They are both very good. Else, go for Tamron 80-200/2.8 which is a brilliant lens!!

Too much CA wide open.

I found that to be a big problem with all HOYA lenses I used to have (24mm 2.8, 28mm 2.8 135mm 2.8; surprisingly the 24mm was much better than the others).

I agree with Mamiya/Sekor 200mm f/3.5 and may I suggest a Telear 200mm f3.5?

I have all three of those Hoyas, they are Tokina lenses rebadged. The 24 and 28 are excellent, not tried the 135 yet, it has some fungus I need to clean.

I really don't need anymore 200mms, I have Konica Hexanon 3.5/200 and Topcon Auto-Topcor 5.6/200, both of which are excellent.

Just trying all my as yet untried lenses to see which I am keeping.

I just bought a Hoya 200mm f3.5 because I love my 28mm Hoya and expected the 200mm to be good. The lens will probably arrive in a few days. I will post some pictures, we'll see if there is an image quality difference between Ian's and mine. I am very excited.

I have
Fujinon T ebc 200mm
Meyer Orestegor 200mm
Canon FDn 200mm f4 non macro
Tamron 70-210 46a
Tamron 80-210 103a
Tamron 80-210 03a
Many other zooms

and none in the list can beat my Kiron 80-200m f4 non zoom lock for sharpness @ 200mm stopped down. But I'm getting suspicious (i.e. zoom ver prime) as maybe the prime lenses are better than the 24mp scans done on my V750 which if produced for a photograph would be about 5ft wide.

The sky at the background is ever difficult to almost any tele lens. Apo lenses are good investment in IQ.

My minolta MD 4,5/300 IF have some CA too. It's gone at F/8.

too much CA and purple fringing. My tamron SP 180/2.5 doesnt do that.
Keep looking. FWIW, I once had a cheap vivitar 200/3.5 that was excellent.

I have Konica Hexanon 3.5/200 and Topcon RE Auto Topcor 5.6/200, both superb so I don't need any other 200mms.

This Hoya/Tokina was awful, as were the 135 and 300mm Hoya/Tokinas. 400mm was acceptable, but not good.

The lens arrived a few days ago. I had one trip with it to the zoo so far. First off manual focusing with the right adapter is not that hard. I use an m42 to EF adapter with a programmable chip so it gives AF confirm and also helps with setting the right shutter speeds for the 200mm.

Focusing this lens is really great for me, the focus ring has a long turn. There is a ton of CA at f3.5, it gets better at 5.6 but the fringing does not disappear. Sharpness is good enough at 5.6 and f8. I could get usable shots at 3.5 too but there is not much detail in them. I will check if my Canon EF-S 18-135 at 135mm is sharper if cropped to the same field of view.

With PP I get get some nice picutres. I will try it for video use. The lower resolution of the video will probably hide the optical errors.

What I absolutely don't like is the minimum focusing distance. 2.5 meters. OK, I know it is such a small lens for its focal length.

I think I like this lens but I didn't have many opportunities to test it yet.

This shot is made with full hole if I remember it correctly. It's in full resolution without PP affecting lens rendering.

This one has usual PP I do for my shots. I think it's f5.6 or f8.

It can be really sharp stopped down with acceptable or barely visible CA levels. I have to do more tests with full-hole.
