As always cheapest and decent dont go together.
I use Lucky film in 135 and 120 to test old cameras. just under a pound a roll if you get 8 or so from China. _________________ Hero in the 'messin-with-cameras-for-the-hell-of-it department'. Official. |

If you can, try some Arista EDU film. Available here in the US from Freestyle. Made, or packaged. in the Czech Republic, it is available ISO 100,200 and 400. 35mm can be had in 24 and 36 exposure rolls and 100Ft bulk rolls for reloadable cartridges. I have been using for several years.
Foma, also from the Czech Republic, is a little more expensive here. I have never tried it, but it might make the list someday.
Ultrafine seems good, I have quite a bit of it. I will be shooting more Ultrafine in the next couple of months.
Buying 35mm film in 100 Ft rolls to use in re-usable cassettes can save money too. A 100 ft roll, using a bulk film loader will make approximately 18 36 exposure rolls. Also nice to be able to make 'short' rolls for testing.

Sorry to jump in here late:
So the cheapest B&W film you can find is roughly 6.5 Euros a roll. >.< Painful.
Having just repatriated to the US I'm finding some things far more expensive than they were in the land of the rising son. E6 processing-- yikes! However, TriX is dirt cheap here compared to Japan which got a price hike.
US international shipping is not great, but if you get a lot in bulk you might be able to make out a bit cheaper on some of those, no? I looked into a few Euro-only products (C41 & E6 developing kits) and I can sometimes get them cheaper shipped over the pond than here. |

Yes, Tri-X 135-36 can usually be bought for $5.00 per roll in lots of 10 or 20. I have been buying on EBAY.
Ultrafine in 100 Ft rolls works out to about $2.22 per roll.

I've used Lucky SHD100 for a fair bit of B&W shots (Flickr set) and I'd hesitate to say it's "good" or "bad", as it's subjective both in terms of personal preference and also subject matter. The main thing with Lucky is that it has quite a strong grain and very little in the way of an anti-halation layer, so you get a pronounced halo effect from strong light sources. All in all I feel it gives a very "classic"/"old time" look to some shots, and that can be great fun to play with. Also, at <£2 per roll on Ebay (order around 10 film bulk packs from China/HK) it's a cheap film to learn with if you are new to B&W, self developing, or just want to play.
For more serious stuff where you want a consistent result, I'd say Agfa APX 100 (Flickr set) makes a good quality affordable film. I got a triple pack on Ebay for less than £15, and some places like Discount Films Direct in the UK sell it for about the same price. Aparently it's very similar to Fomapan, though I've never tried the latter myself.
