I just bought a j-9 with broken aperture blades for £25, perfect condition apart from the blades

This is the version i have

Here's what i'm dealing with.

I cannot get to the blades from the front, there seems to be no way of getting the middle element out.
Any tips on where to start?

You can try following this http://www.fotuz.ru/67-razborka-ob-ektiva-yupiter-9-i-remont-diafragmyi.html

it's in Russian but i guess a Google translate will do the trick.
and be careful with the blades - do not force them if they are not moving properly - if you feel force just rearrange them again from the start.

Thanks for the reply.
Unfortunately that is a different version of the j-9, it looks easier. The link shows that you have to go through the front of the lens.
I can only see this line as being a way to get to the lens off, i took out the tiny screw and tried to twist it off but nothing. What else could the screw be for?

Jvg got to the same point and also had the same line. vv

I will private message him and see if i get an answer.

This J9 looks same as the Kiev version.
Since you had the screw removed now you just need to unscrew the front part.
you can use a rubber sheet to hold the lens sturdy.

Thanks for the extra push, i tried to unscrew it by hand with no luck.

I guess the rubber added a bit of extra grip or spread the load, also did not think i had something like a rubber mat.

So i have access now, will post an update later or tomorrow.

Again thanks Smile

So this could have been the reason why the blades were dislodged...hmm.
I flattened the blade and smoothed it out so its not that bad now, and the macro pics make it seem worse.
I'm not sure if it will work or if i have to go with 14 blades.

I'm cleaning the blades at the moment, but i heard that jupiter lenses just have some oil, is this correct? if so should i add some sort of oil or just keep them clean?
Most of my russian lenses have some oil, my jupiter-8 and helios 44-2 have quiet a bit.

Hi,

Keep the blades clean without puring any oil on it. The oil we use to see in these J-9's had came from the grease at some lub points in the lens,

Best,

Renato

The blades need to be clean otherwise they will stick - in the link i gave you above the guy sinks them in gasoline in order to clean them from the grease. This damaged blade you can remove - the aperture will still function without 1 blade it will just not be very even . If you remove 2 then it will form a hole while you close it past f8 Smile

Good news, the operation was a success. Smile

Thanks for the help with the oil, yeah i used alcohol instead of gasoline and it worked a treat.I will miss the multi coloured look to the blades though.
It took a couple of hours to reassemble the blades and put it back together again.I thought i would try with the broken blade first and it works perfectly,no catches or hitching.

I have taken a couple of shots out of the window and it performs as a jupiter-9 should.

Pretty good buy for £25

Thanks Smile

Hey, yeah there was not a lot of info on what we needed to fix our lens.
I was going to give up too, but std said try a rubber sheet, and it worked. Smile
I hope your lens works just as good as mine does.
