RE Auto Topcor serial number and name ring description

Welcome to the mflenses Teebain. There are not much info about Topcor lenses either on or off the web. The Topcon Story book written by Antonetto & Russo is the main source of information about Topcon cameras and lenses. Unfortunately the authors gathered their info from document available at the Italian branch of Topcon which might not be completed nor updated. Therefore there are lots of gaps and errors. This thread is a group effort to bring the information about RE Auto Topcor lenes up to date.

In your case the black 25/3.5 was not even mentioned in the book. All of the known serial numbers are overlapped with the silver V1. Your copy is indeed the very first black 25/3.5 with centimeter focal length ever found (so far). So unless we have a new challenger, you lenses will hold a special place in the hearts of all Topcon lovers. Like Dog

BTW A&R said that 7,500 25/3.5 lenses were made in total. Noone know how many of these were black.

I just joined this forum, and it's my first forum experience. So I'll give it a try... I have read a number of entries on mflenses before, and it's been a great source of info on various lenses I've considered picking up.

Tonight I was searching for information on the topcor 2.5cm f3.5 black lens, and I found a serial number listing for this v3 black version in this part of the forum . I was wondering if anyone knows if serial number 933166 is truly the first black version made of roughly 700 total. I would really like to verify this as I just bought this lens with serial number 933166 from an online auction. Are there any topcor experts out there that can verify this for me. I had no idea about the serial number until after I purchased it. I picked it up due to the sample shots and comments for a retro focus ultra wide lens on my a7ii.

It is interesting that A&R estimate that 2,000-3,000 copies were manufactured for this version. Your lenses might be a proof that more than 5,000 were made. Unless numbers were skipped.

Btw what are the differences in optics among 58/1.8 variants mentioned by the OP?

Not sure I understand Klaus - what is a fake ebay listing, and why is it done?

Easy to see, usually very expensive stuff listed for some start auction price at say $45 and in the description there is an image (not text!!!) with some emai address in bright colors and BUY IT NOW FOR $2000 ONLY, "just contact me"
a dead give away that it is a hacked account and some fake auction listing piled up coming from that (guitars, carbon bikes, all exopensicve stuff...).

Of course I notice the always same pictures and usually report those asap then... Wink

Hi, I'm relatively new here. Chanced upon this thread when researching my newly purchased Topcon set which comes with a 58mm 1.4.

I believe the lens belongs to the classification below, serial 11251197.

V2
RE AUTO TOPCOR 1:1,4 f=58mm TOKYO KOGAKU 1125xxxx
Black

Hope to gather more information about this V2, and about the lens. Looking for the hood and front cap too.

Cheers

I acquired recently a Tokyo Kogaku Topcor.
On the ring it says: RE Macro Auto Topcor 58mm/3.5
S/N: 13706173
Black version.
Missing the rubber ring but otherwise the glass looks pristine.

Congrats, it's a nice lens, I'm also looking for the black 58/3.5 Macro and the black 58/1.8(with chrome filter ring), I'd love to find a black 25, but I doubt I'll ever find one.

Yes, congrats, please post some pics from the 135/2, I don't think there are any samples on the forum yet.
I've been curious about it for a long while, since i got it's little brother, the R 135/3.5, I've since picked up the R 90/3.5, 200/4, & 300/5.6
There were possible prototypes of a 28/2.8 and 50/2.8 which I really wish they made. Sad

Thanks to Himself for doing a deal for the 58/3.5
It's grease was very stiff so I needed to clean and re-grease it.
Here it is all apart:
Recently Added-28

The front helicoid enters through the back of the middle helicoid:
All Photos-1610

The rear helicoid attached to the middle:
All Photos-1611

All back together with fresh grease:
All Photos-1613

The mount comes off with 4 screws, the aperture ring comes off next (the detent ball was missing).
4 screws hold the 2 guide rails(2 each) between the front and rear helicoids, and a witness mark where the helicoids break apart... That's it, way more simple than I expected.

Thanks for sharing this information. I have two RE 3.5/58mm Macro as well, one of them waiting to be re-greased.

Smile Glad to be of help.
I'll add a few more details for you, after removing the mount and aperture ring, I removed the rubber(if yours is original, check how soft it is), unscrewed the stop screw through the hole in the focus ring(I'm not sure I needed to do this, I assumed I did), set the lens to MFD, unscrewed the rails, then removed the rear helicoid, and added a witness mark in the area under the rubber in line with the center of the DOF scale where the helicoid separates, I did the same with the front helicod, there is a little pointer in the aperture mechanism that aligned with the same witness mark.

I didn't have a thin long screwdriver to separate the focus scale from the middle helicoid, so I didn't have clear access to the threads, so cleaning those threads were a bit of a challenge, I think it was a small flat blade ~1.2mm and the thin shaft needs to be ~1.5"/3cm long, mine are about 2cm long and couldn't reach the screws.

I also had a click/partial obstruction halfway in the focus travel, turns out the aperture bar/rail that attaches to the aperture ring needed to be bent out slightly near the end.

I just noticed my Auto aperture lever is missing a rail off the mount, someone removed it.... grrr
Could you photograph the backside of the mount showing the rail so I can make a replacement, thanks.

According to Antonetto & Russo, of the four versions only the 99 & 116 series share the same optics.

The Silver one I have, with beauty ring; " RE,Auto-Topcor 1:1,8 f=5,8cm Tokyo Kogaku Japan 99005073 "
has one element more at the front than what is shown in any of the lens diagrams for a Topcor 58mm 1.8 at this page.

http://www.topgabacho.jp/Topconclub/lenscut.htm

On the 99005073 from front to rear side -> ( ( ((|)) )

Is that common knowledge or new information?
