Prokudin-Gosrky, one of the pioneers of color photography, impressed the Russia Tsar with Leo Tolstoy's portrait at a point that the Tsar comissioned him to make a 10-year project of photo-documentation of the whole Empire. The photographer started in 1909 and finished in 1915, prior to the plan due to war and instability. Look at the faces and colors, it's just amazing!
When he left Russia in 1918 he was let to bring around of 1500 glass negatives with him. In 1948 they were bought by the Library of congress from his relatives, were digitized and postprocessed several times. As far as hundreds of R-G-B channel images are in public access, you may play with them in image editor yourself.
Here is the same photo with digital processing applied, from the web-site of the Library of Congress:
The whole collection in open access.
