Alright, for me this is the definitive test to see if I am really gaining any added capacity with this 800mm mirror lens. So I ran a comparision test about 20 minutes apart. The 800mm was on the 5D. The lens was on one tripod and the 5D on another (bit of a pain). The 400/5.6 was used with the 1.4x tcon and mounted to my 30D for about the same "reach". But I only used the lens mount of the 400 to steady this one. I used MLU and and remote for both and shot at ISO 400. The mirror seems to meter differently and had a higher shutter speed. So, despite more support and higher shutte speeds the 400mm combo is better in my opinion. To be specific, this is a Minolta RF 800/8.0 made in a Leica R mount against my Canon 400/5.6 and Canon 1.4x teleconvertor. Focusing was done manually on both using an anglefinder set at 2x to get critical focus.
Judge for yourself. The are unprocessed 100% RAW crops.
The 400mm
The 800mm
The 400mm
The 800mm
I see no justification to keep the 800mm show it goes back via their return policy. First time I've actually sent something back. Since this was my first time shooting with a mirror I wonder if this one is just bad or typical of results. _________________ MF lenses: Contax Zeiss 28/2.8, 35/2.8, 50/1.4,

Hello jamesdak,
Thank you for this post, I have the 20D with the 400 f5.6 and use it with the 1.4x and the 2x sometimes. The mirror lockup sure helps with the 2x I have found.

Hello James
This is a nice comparison. I'm not surprised by the poor IQ of the 800 mirror. What is a pleasant surprise is the quite respectable performance of the 400 and TC. You have a keeper there I think.

The 800mm is one it's way back home with it's tail tucked between it's legs. _________________ MF lenses: Contax Zeiss 28/2.8, 35/2.8, 50/1.4,
