I've modified an cheap Viltrox Canon EF --> E-Mount (NEX) adapter to work with FF-E-Mount cameras like Sony A7 or Sony A7r.
You can find these Viltrox adapters on Ebay for 65-90€.
The Viltrox adapter supports
-AF (very slow, hunting in low light)
-MF (also for electronic lenses like the EF 40/2.
-Image stabilisation (if lens supports IS)
-Writing focal length etc. into EXIF data
-It can hold quite heavy lenses and has a tripod mount
-And most important: Full aperture control!
The modifaction:
-Is very easy
-Non destructive (adapters can be still used on 1.5x crop E-Mount cameras)
-No special tools are necessary
-Risk to destroy the adapter is quite low
Before conversion the adapter shows slight to very strong vignetting, depending on lens design and focal length.
That's how vignetting looked with Canon EF 17-40 F4 L @17mm and 1m focusing distance before modification:
Tools I've used.
-A screwdriver
-A very sharp knife (new scalpel etc.)
-A Dremel tool (not necessary but faster, a very sharp knife would also do the job alone)
-About 20-30min of time.
-Before modification I removed the female EF bajonett using the screwdriver.
(Actually it's not really neceassary to the remove the EF bajonett at all and you could skip this step, but it's easy and I found it to be helpful to remove it because then it's easier to clean everything later)
-Then the male E-Mount has to be removed using the screwdriver.
Be careful not to damage the thin ribbon cable!
-After the E-Mount bajonett metal ring has been unscrewed you can easily remove the black plastic ring from the inside of the metal bajonett, using the screwdriver as a lever. After you've removed the black plastic ring you can also easily remove the contact circuit board with a click aswell. You can discard the black plastic ring - it causes vignetting.
-
-Now the dirty part starts!
Be very careful not to damage the ribbon cable or the electronics of course!
Trimm the internal hood with a Dremel (or other cutting tool) until it should barely cover FF.
-Remove the burs and make some fine trimming using the scalpel if necessary.
-Take a soft paper towel and a blower to remove all burs and dirt from the adapter. Make everything as clean as possible!
-Now you can put everything were it belongs again, except the black plastic ring.
-Done!
This is how looks @17mm and infinity after conversion. There's no vignetting added by the adapter anymore!
