Could be Japanese or Korean origin (but definitely not East German). Performance similar to similar lenses of this vintage, which is to say it could be bad, mediocre or acceptable. However, the PB mount limits its compatibility, only allowing you to mount it on Canon EOS (with loss of infinity, or possibly with re-adjustment of an infinity stop) and mirrorless cameras. Verdict: I wouldn't pay more than 10 or 15 EUR for one. Actually, I'd rather skip it at any price, as there are better options available that are easier to adapt (e.g. RMC Tokina in P/K mount).

I can tell only about Pentacon Prakticar 70-210
As I know, if such type of lens do not have word VARIO... it means that this lens assembled in Japan.
Only german-building version has word VARIO

It's a Samyang lens:

Click here to see on Ebay

(for the future) the hyperlink goes to an auction for this lens labelled Samyang with original box.

My copy is too new to be german, though I bought it in Germany and it came in a Pentacon box all writen in german.
I'll keep it to shoot birds and if it's that crappy I'll let it go to a good soul.

Thanks for helping.

What camera would you be using it on?

Sony NEX 6.
Too bad I won't be able to use it on my K3. I'll never buy PB lenses again. Just got this one because it was really cheap.

Are there even any genuine East German zooms?

As said already, Far East lens, rebadged in the wild 1990+ years to take advantage of the fine brand names. There is at least another midrange zoom like that.

Some may even have been assembled in Germany but I would doubt that.

Screenshot from the auction, note that the lens is labelled Samyang/Phoenix which may explain who made some Phoenix lenses:

Yes, there are Carl Zeiss Jena Vario-Sonnar 80-200/4 (M42; also sold as Vario-Prakticar in PB mount) and Vario-Pancolar 35-70/2.4-3.7 (also sold in PB mount as Vario-Prakticar). These are genuine East German zooms, and the only zooms made for 35mm film by Carl Zeiss Jena that I know of.
