Ho ho ho, got myself a treat for Christmas!

Usually a flower lens but it's the wrong time of year. My lighting is not great, please consider these test shots Embarassed

All shots wide open. The effect persists as you stop down, but the size of the rings shrinks with each stop.

1) Not a typical look for product shots:

2) with a short macro tube. As you focus closer the rings get larger.

3) with a short macro tube.

Maybe I'll buy a couple of houseplants, the effect seems more suited to organic subjects.

Trioplans are interesting.
Perfect for Christmas trees.

How are the shutter curtains on your very nice Exakta ?
I have a VX1000 like that and surprisingly there are no holes.
The bad curtains seem to date from a particular decade.
Needs lube though, it squawks.

I love both a lot, can you explain how you did it ? I think you will have many followers, including me.

I bought this from Ebay seller Cupog, it was listed as CLA'd and working and is in fine mechanical shape. I'm not sure if he replaced the curtains or not.

I wish I remember where I saw this so I could give credit. Rolling Eyes

In the last few weeks I saw a link about using a mylar emergency blanket to create OoF highlights. You scrunch it up and then shine a light on it, the thousands of crinkles give lots of point light sources.

These blankets are very cheap, I found mine in a hardware store for $4.

I'm using a desk lamp with a CF bulb (doesn't run hot) to illuminate the mylar. I used a makeshift gel to give the colour cast, i.e. semitransparent plastic binder covers from an office supply store.

Metering is finicky, for example with the trioplan if the highlights are overexposed you don't get rings, but regular looking filled circle bokeh with blown highlights around the edges.

I'll whip up a post for the DIY section, as you can imagine it also looks nice with Helios, Pancolar, etc!

Not at all a "flower lens", as I have two (coated, uncoated), but you got it to very good use!!

Firing a flash off camera at some sequin cloth works well
