Beautiful lenses, do you have an Exakta Varex too ?

PostPosted: Tue Aug 24, 2010 4:53 pm    Post subject: Biotars Reply with quote

Yes, I do have an Exakta Varex VX.
It was my Fathers Camera.
I'm not using it for photographing, it's on display in my living room.
The process of scanning film just got too tedious for me.

It were the lenses accompanying the camera however, that got me on the alternative lenses track.
I was curious how these Lenses would look on my Canon EOS, and the rest is, as they say, history...

Put them to Varex too, they are more attractive there in my opinion.
I have same opinion about film a few years ago and now I can't live without film Smile

Beautiful !!

How do they perform in comparison to newer lenses?

PostPosted: Thu Aug 26, 2010 8:34 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

These Lenses perform very different from modern lenses!
That's why I use them.
Here you can see a Galery of Photos of these Lenses AND examples of Photo's made with them: http://www.miedema.dyndns.org/galleries/czj-alu/index.html

Biotar can be sharper than Planar 85mm wide open , basically same sharp at all aperture and it has spirit not always easy to shoot with her.

Oeps! I noticed that above i linked to the wrong Galery. I can't find out how to edit my Post.
Here is the right link to my Alu Carl Zeiss Jena galery: http://www.miedema.dyndns.org/galleries/czj-alu/index.html
Here you also can find Photos made with these lenses.

Attilla, my Biotars are wideopen definitely not as sharp as a modern lens. but I love to use them just the same!

Regards, Gertjan.

very nice gallery Gertjan and beautiful lenses! These have a wonderful "glow" around esp. visible in your flower shots (shot open I guess).

Thanks for the compliment, Klaus.
Actually my favorite stop for flower shots is one stop closed down, for both Biotars.
I always make an f-stop series, full open. One stop down etc., and most of the time I choose the one stop down version.
For me this gives the best balance between sharpness and glow / bokeh.
Usually I use a small extension ring to get enough magnification. So I am using the lens a bit outside the focusing range it is optimized for.
It only gives a more beautiful glow!
The Tessar and Biometar are most used wide-open.
Actually, in my gallery you can find the shooting specs (f-stop etc.) under the photos (as far as known)
Regards, Gertjan.

Lots of good shots there but "Wiel machinekamer Schiffshebewerk Henrichenburg" stands out (I also edited the link).

I only have the m42 mount 2/58 but I see the attraction to these lenses.

PostPosted: Sat May 28, 2011 4:53 pm    Post subject: Exakta-EOS adapters Reply with quote

LucisPictor,

Exakta to Canon EOS adapters are available on e-bay.
I tried several, the best I found look like this one http://cgi.ebay.com/LENS-ADAPTER-Exakta-Topcon-Canon-EOS-EF-500D-7D-5D-/220633147296?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item335ec2a7a0

you can see them clearly in the photos in my gallery: http://www.miedema.dyndns.org/galleries/czj-alu/index.html

Problem is, that the difference between the Exacta and EOS back focal distance is only 0,7mm.
All adapters I tried were too thick.
I solved this by readjusting the infinity setting of the lenses, however, that was not easy.
Infinity focus on these lenses is adjusted with a spacer ring, which at the factory is chosen for the correct thickness.
Soo, a friend turned for me 0,2-0,3mm thinner rings, in steps of 0,05mm. and with these I could adjust infinity focus again.

The biotar 75 f1.5 is easy to readjust, simply loosen the screws on the focus ring and readjust!

After correcting infinity focus, with some lenses the mirror didn't clear.
So I also had to sand the back retainer rings a bit.

All in all, not the easiest lenses to adapt, but it was sure worth the trouble!

Regards, Gertjan.
