Today I tried and held a Leica for the first time. An M9 body with my Voigtlander Nokton Classic 40mm f1.4 lens

Taken during today's model photography workshop where I provide photography tuition ( http://www.matthewosbornephotography.co.uk/Photography-Tuition.html) and lighting techniques from my Coventry studio

Once I upload the photos to my laptop I was sold!

Congrats on your new toy, I am sure it will give you many good shots. However, to me your medium format shots always stood out from your work , so here's hoping your MF camera wouldn't be forgotten Wink

Thanks.. don't worry, remember I already own and use a Nikon D800 yet still shoot medoum format film. The Leica will mean that yes potentially the Nikon D80 gets less use but i'll be taking the new small Leica M9 with my large MF bodies on shoots. I travel with my day job so it was tough to fit all I wanted in my hand luggage to include the D800 and a MF camera. With the Leica M9 I will have more space to do so.

For the end of 2013 / then 2014 you may see colour coming back to my stream. I've already accumulated perhaps 10 rolls of colour film I need to develop and plan to do more in the future. Kodak Portra tones to work alongside the Leica M9 & Voigtlander Classic 40mm f1.4 colours.

See my wordpress blog for the latest as I don't always get chance to post here. Thanks!

Very nice start with your M9. I've had mine for 2.5years now, continues to produce gorgeous shots. I've used a variety of lenses on it- from a 1934 5cm F1.5 Sonnar up though the Voigtlander 35/1.2 Nokton.

Gallery is here, some made with custom modified lenses:

Thanks. I've got the Voigtlander 35/1.2 Nokton on my to buy list. Have you tried the 40/1.4 Nokton? Is the 35mm sharper wide open?

My next lens will be a 28mm I think. I am not sure whether the cheaper Rokkor 28mm f2.8 is as good as the Voigtlander Ultron 28mm f2.8? Has anyone got any experience with the Rokkor? Is there a reason why it is half the cost of the VC?

Thanks!

it is Voigtlander Ultron 28mm f2.0 and that might be the reason;) Ultron is a nice lens, but I cannot compare as I don't have experience with Rokkor.

Thanks. Ah yes my mistake. The Ultron is f2 hence the higher price. I think I will go with that as will need a faster lens for low light Leica M9 wedding photography if I need to keep the ISO under/ at 800!

I have not used the 40/1.4, but do have the 40/2 Summicron and the 35/1.7 Ultron. The latter is one of my favorite lenses. It I tiny compared with the 35/1.2 Nokton.

Thanks Brian, i'll check out the 35/1.7 Ultron.. but I think the only reason I wanted a 35mm was for the f1.2! Smile ..as already have the 40/1.4 which is tiny, bright and a similar focal length

Sample shots with the Ultron. The Ultron, like the 35/1.2 Nokton, is an Aspheric design. No noticeable focus shift, smooth bokeh.

35/1.2 Nokton shots here:

Thanks Brian, some nice shots there. Yes if you get chance to upload some 35/1.2 it would be great to compare.

I'll post a Leica test shots blog link soon as did first shoot with mine yesterday using 40/1.4
