Hi all,

It's a silly question and you will have a good reason to laugh at me, but... do you know a DIY method to polish lenses ?

I would like to restore the sanded front element of the 17~170 f2.8 zoom I have.

Obviously it'll be goodbye to the coating, but you will have to make sure you don't concentrate on one area too much or will change the profile of the lens and end up with uneven light transmission across it.
I can think of nothing that would replace a coating - I have heard of coating kits, but they are rubbish, from what I've heard.

Cerium oxide . In some toothpastes , such "email diamant" or "teelak" , or dedicated products (more expensive)

Jeweller's rouge is the older method based on Ferric Iron Oxide .
Not so easy , but possible with some care . I tried on front element of a pre-war elmar with half-success (I didn't insist too much and there are some scratches remaining) It is looonnnng to proceed ! The warnings of Farside are right ! Mr. Green
