I really love my Nikkor 2.8/24, it's an old single coated pre-Ai that has been Ai converted professionally sometime in the past.

I think the only meaningful step up from that lens would be to something many times as expensive like the Distagon T* 25mm.

Yet another vote for 24/2.8 Smile I own the Ai version, use it on my D300s and like it a lot.

Nikkor Ai-S 28mm f/2.8. Brilliant lens.

+1

The 28/2.8 Series-E lens is also a keeper.

+1 on that. And I'd really like the 28/2 in my collection Smile

although I have no experience with it, I would bet the AI 28mm F3.5 is no slouch.

Given a pricetag up to 300 euros, I would go for the 24mm f2.8 AIS. That is a great lens. But the 28mm f3.5 in AI or AIS is also a nice lens, though not as sharp as the 24mm.

Samples:

Nikkor 24mm f2.8 AIS

Nikkor 28mm f3.5 AI

I second that. I'd recommend going with Nikkor AIS 24/2.8 (but NOT 24/2! the f/2 lens flares like hell, and doesn't get really sharp in the corners until well stopped down) and Nikkor AIS 28/2.

vote for both 24/2.8 ais and 28/2 ais

What about these:
Nikon 28mm f2 Nikkor-N.C AI
Nikon 28mm f3.5 AI-S Nikkor
Nikon 28mm f3.5 Nikkor-H
Sigma 24mm f2.8 Super-Wide II
i even list last one i generally avoid Sigma. and i search reason get such lens if these are better than
24-x/28-x zooms.... i still like more zooms often but sometimes sharpness etc needs are important. and
wides is area where primes works for me better reason is subjects.

Hi there: The Nikkor 28mm f3.5 AI-S is a fine lens, and identical optically to the AI version in slightly different barrel. I have both, along with the Series E. I find myself reaching most often for the AI version, but it's merely a nostalgic thing for the barrel design. Any of the three can produce nice work, and of course the E is much smaller.
