Right now I got 2 200mm MF lenses and for both min focus distance is around 2.5 - 3 m. Do you know what is the shortest distance you can get with old mf lenses? 3m is a bit too much for my liking.

My Nikkor-Q 200/4 mfd is 2m.

Define "Old" Smile I'm looking at my Vivitar 3.5/200 (70's/early 80's era) and it reads 6 ft (1.8m) minimum...

Canon FD 200 f4 Macro Smile

I know it's a macro lens with shallow DOF and not probably what you're looking for but you can get very close Wink

The downside of this lens is its price and availability Wink

Only downside at f=3 white areas have a blue glow.

You can put some extension rings or mount the lens on bellows.
That will reduce the minimum focus distance.

Photax 3.5 2.6 m / 7.5 feet
Takumar 4 2.5 m / 8.2 feet
Soligor 4.5 3m / 10 feet

But the metric imperial conversions leave a bit to be desired.

Here are 2 threads regarding Vivitar 200's but the 2nd one is regarding the lens most similar to mine. The presets are from an earlier period...

It appears @ 3.5 not so clean but 5.6 and higher it's nice.

If quickly going from infinity to near focus isn't required, slap a couple macro tubes on the front and you'll get much closer focus. My 400mm focuses no closer than 25 feet, but with a macro tube set the minimum distance is more like 7 feet.

I am aware of this but it's not a route I want to go

Don't use the super dinarex 4/200. The minimal distance is 8 m. Very Happy

Novoflex 200mm/4 with its focussing bellow grip ~ 1 meter.
But it is not very small.

I don't know all the 200mm, but the Canon nFD 200mm f4 is probably the smallest, lightest, (cheapest), with the best mfd, among the non-macro 200/4, :
1.5m
121.5mm
440g
(Yep, better than the Nikkors ai/ais Wink

And, yes, there's 2 close focus 200mm, the Vivitar 200/3 and the Tamron 180/2.5, both 1.2m

Then, an intermediate mammoth, the MC SONNAR 2,8/180 CARL ZEISS JENA DDR 1,1kg/1,365kg : mfd 1.7m

All these lenses are great !

2 zooms also offers you a 200mm macro 1:2 (i.e. mfd 0.7m) for a ridiculous price + of course the Vivitar 90/180 (but forget the price unless you're lucky Wink

I can't get canon FD because I want to use it on canon eos and adapter has glass element in it

I tried some 200 primes (Nikon, Pentacon, Takumar and Yashica DX all f4), Zeiss Sonnar 200/2,8.
Now I have CZ Vario Sonnar 80-200/4 T* which beat all 200s I tried at 200mm
CZ Vario Sonnar 80-200/4 T* has MFD 1 meter. Here's my samples http://ihyaahsani.blogspot.com/2012/09/cz-vario-sonnar-80-2004-t.html

Why am I not surprised...?
I didn't know about the 1m MFD, great stuff.

That is some lens you have there, the clarity is very impressive.

My Vivitar (Komine) 200mm 3.5 has MFD of 1.80;
CZJ Sonnar 180mm 2.8 has MFD 1.70m.
But Tamron SP-52A 70-210mm 3.5-4.0 goes byond 1.00m en does 1:2 without extra accessoires. Very nice for € 10.00 on a shrift market:D
But somewhat large and heavy.
I have a Tamron 103A 80-210mm 3.8-4 (smaller and lighter) with MFD 0.90m (1 : 2.8 )
So I think you have to look for some zoom with a good reputation.
The both Tamrons din't cost me too much (the SP was a steal) and the 103A is not much larger then an older 200mm prime.
