Hi guys!

I'm missing my Nikkor Ai 300mm f4.5 since I sold it and our local dealer has a 300mm f4.5 Minolta MC Rokkor for sale at a price of 30€!

How does the Minolta compare to the Nikkor?

As my Samsung is in for service for the next three weeks, I need to rely on your thoughs! Wink

rokkor lenses are as good of the quality as nikkors, take the lens you won't regret it. you could always resell it

I had bunch of Nikon and Minolta both, Nikon has more stable , better quality in general , Minolta made some fantastic lenses , but not all excellent. For 30 EUR you not risk much I think lens will be above all lenses what you can get for this sum and in lucky case this will be good as your Nikkor.

It's supposed to be a sharp lens, but I haven't tried one personally. For that price, if it's in good shape I'd grab it. you can always resell it if it dosen't meet your needs.

Bought it!

It's in nearly mint condition apart from some small fungus on one of the inner frontal lenses! Maybe I can disassemble and clean it!

Mechanically this lens is a dream!

I'm looking forward to testing this lens out, sadly my NX11 was sent in for repairs...

I'm posting pictures as soon as I have my camera back!

Thank you for these - as usually! - careful made comparisons.

I have a Tele Rokkor QD 4.5/300mm on my way; this was the first 4.5/300mm with SR bayonet. It is a [4/3] construction, much simpled than the MC 4.5/300mm, and without LD glass of course (i suspect the MC 4.5/300 to have a sort of LD glass, since there are some remarks about "new glass" in the contemprorary German Minolta literature). The MD 4.5/300mm (the IF lens) was said to have an new prorietary Minolta LD glass as well. I'm not sure if it was a LD glass (abbe number around 70) or even an AD/ED/ULD glass (abbe number aroud 80). The Minolta MD 4.5/300 IF has a s little CAs as the Nikkor AiS 4.5/300mm ED-IF.

by the way, did you have experience with 300/5.6 versions? I've heard an opinion that some 300/5.6 version /don't know what design was mentioned exactly/ is very sharp and even may be sharper than 4.5 sisters, but I still didn't get this lens and not sure that get it soon

I do own all the three different Minolta 5.6/300mm lenses, namely the Rokkor QD 5.6/300mm [4/4], the Tele Rokkor PD 5.6/300mm [5/5], and the MD Tele Rokkor 5.6/300mm [also 5/5]. Due to difficulties with air turbulences and haze, i have never pubished the corresponding test results. I may try to re-test them as soon as possible, when the air is calm and clean ...

I just got a nearly pristine Tele Rokkor QD 4.5/30cm - which means that i can compare most Minolta SR 300mm lenses now:

- Tele Rokkor QD 4.5/30cm
- MC I Tele Rokkor HF 4.5/300mm
- MC II Tele Rokkor HF 4.5/300mm
- MC X Tele Rokkor HF 4.5/300mm
- MD-II Tele Rokkor 4.5/300mm (IF)

- Tele Rokkor QD 5.6/30cm
- MC X Tele Rokkor PE 5.6/300mm
- MD-II Tele Rokkor 5.6/300mm

Results will follow tomorrow.

Here's a first overview, with preliminary results including a few famous Canon, Nikon, Oly and Pentax lenses.

24MP FF, 100% crops from the extreme corners.

Most interesting in my opinion:

1) Nikkor 4.5/300mm IF-ED has as much lateral CAs as the Minolta MD-II 4.5/300mm IF, the Olympus OM 4.5/300mm or the Pentax M* 4/300mm ED (three large ED lenses!).

2) The oldest Minolta lenses in this thest (QD 4.5/300 and QD 5.6/300) have less CAs than their later counterparts, but also less resolution wide open

3) By far the best lens is Canons venerable FL-F 5.6/300mm (1968): It is the first "consumer" lens with artificial fluorite elements ever produced; the later FL-F/FD-F 2.8/300mm has more CAs.


I have re-run the test a second time, including a few more lenses such as the Canon FD-F 2.8/300, the Minolta AF 2.8/300, and a few Zooms including the nFD 5.6/100-300 mm L. Results will follow on artaphot.ch
