Hmm. My copy which I'm currently selling (from 1959, also red P) looks imho better or a least more contrasty on my NEX and on film.

Here some examples (on color Film and with very slight PP though, but without PP it looked also better imho)

Here's an example wide open vs stopped down
-
(right one is F8 or F11 if I remember corretly)

Is you copy dusty or scratched somehow? Of which production date is it?

1951 and not scratched , dust is little, distance film or digital is matter. I have three copies , 1951, 1952 and 1957 I will sell too 1957 lens.

hmm might be, I've never tried my copy on digital in bright sunlight but always indoor/lowlight and I know the lens is prone to flare on digital sensors. Maybe decreasing of the coverage to APS-C size with a tight hood would increase the contrast a lot.

This sharpest at wide open from all copies each copy is a bit different. With Sonnar I have 5 copies this is one of the sharpest wide open all are good enough to any purposes at least to me. I think I will sell 1957 J-3 screw mount and keep others.
