When I was taking all of the shots for the "bad bokeh" series about the Konica Hexanon AR 85 1.8 lens--actually, it turned out there was little enough of that--I accidentally found a great example of veiling flare. The first shot has the flare, and I used my hand to block the sun for the second shot; an appropriate lens hood would do the same job. The sun is not in the frame, but is only a little bit out of the frame, directly upwards from the lens axis.
Both photos were taken at f1.8. No cropping, no post-processing other than resizing.
