Do you have any comparison between your Nikkor and its direct competitors Tokina 100/Sigma 105/Tamron 90?
I'm about to buy one of the above, so far Tokina has seemed closest to my heart, but now I'm not sure anymore, your samples are impressive too  |

They are pretty much same , Tokina , Tamron , Nikon may Nikon a little step better as usual. In case of you I take Nikon rather than others.

Are you talking about AF lenses ? I have the Tamron 90 mm f/2.8. Colours are a little muted compared to Nikon colours although I can't make a direct comparison with the Nikon micro. It is however sharp - as expected.

| Yes, I'm after an AF macro lens, undecided between the Tokina and Nikkor now. I had a similar impression of the colours after viewing loads of Tamron samples. Tokina looked better, only finding a reasonably priced second-hand one is quite difficult. |

I haven't used the Tokina but I'm going to have to agree with Attila. Pretty much all the same. I think where the Nikkor excels over the others is at it's infinity focusing. About the only other 100mm-ish macro I would "keep" along side the Nikkor is the C/Y Macro-Planar 100mm f/2.8 Zeiss - and that's only because of it's "roundness". Roundness being the quality of a lens's transition curvature from in-focus to OOF blur. The C/Y MP100/2.8 has that typical Zeiss roundness that people seem to like so much. I guess that's a major part of what some people call The 3D look.
There's one other which beats all of those tho the price is steep! And that's the Voigtlander Lanthar APO 125mm F/2.5 1:1 Macro. You'll never find a better lens than that one - it does everything as near to absolute perfect as is possible in something man-made. Using it you won't need to process your images unless you're typing to create FX or something. It sells for between $2000 and $2800 depending on the mount you get it in. It's been out of production for awhile so it's sometimes hard to find. But if you have the budget you can stop thinking about any of the above.
PS: AF is not useful on a macro lens when shooting at magnifications above about 1:5. It can AF but just your breath will defocus the shot again. So you MF to the subject then wait till your body movement catches the focus point and you click! And then repeat because the first one missed anyway. AF for distance shots when using a macro lens is usually slow (except maybe for the tamron) so tracking and stuff like that which AF is good for doesn't work too good anyway. Yep, macro shooting is one place where even AF advocates switch over to MF. Knowing this in advance might help you make the best (better) selection. I hope. |
